The question of “is there actually such a thing as a British muscle car” has been doing my brain in all day today! The only true example that I can think of that even comes close is the Ford GT40.

The GT40 was designed, built and unveiled in Slough, England by a team of British engineers poached by Ford from other companies such as Lotus, Lola, Cooper and Aston Martin. Originally designed to compete in the 24-hour LeMans the car was fitted with a 7 litre V8 with 485 bhp and this carried the team of 3 GT40’s to victory in 1966 with a 1-2-3 finish.

In 1967 the GT40 went into production with a detuned 4.7 litre V8 with 306 bhp. Unfortunately the GT40 was mainly aimed at the American market.

Ford GT40. Built in Britain for the American’s. D’OH!....I give up! :banghead:

GT40 doesn't quite fit the bill as it wasn't a production car before it was made into a racer. (Still a great car, and I'd trade-in my wedding tackle for one any day!)

Cobra's, Tigers, Griffiths etc all kind-of work, but again they were already 'sports' cars before being muscle-ised. (Cobra is as threatening to my bits as the GT40!)

What the yanks did was take a stock 'saloon' car and turn it into a fire-breathing monster. Whilst their 6-pot siblings were meandering down the interstates with Mum, Dad & 2 kids aboard, the almost-identical Muscle-cars were tearing up the strips of the US piloted by a bunch of baby-boomers.

I don't think there is a direct comparison with anything that we (in England) do or did.

My opinion only. Please don't anyone take offence (again!):D:lol::D:lol::D

Rover P5/P5B This was in production for a long while with the 100/110 Rover straight 6, then was retrofitted with the Rover/Buick V8, and the rest is history as they say.

Good call, but whilst the principle may have been the same as the American idea, the end result was a bit.....well soft I guess, the Rover V8 wasn't exactly a fire breathing engine in stock P5B trim

It was in the 60s when it was first introduced

I simply cannot believe how rude people are on this forum, Someone asks a simple question and it ends up being a complete bitching session, Handbags at dawn people.

How you can get on your high horse about 'schooling' people when it is only one persons opinion is beyond me.

I presume you're referring to this statement, but feel you're being a little harsh. I think it's quite clearly meant tongue in cheek.

Oh, one thing, don;t school someone who loves, lives and breathes American motors. Not you Tazrocks, that was aimed at 60ftman.

Up until now I had seen this thread both as interesting and informative and don't detect any hint of bitching. It's good to hear different opinions, and perhaps more importantly why people hold those opinions. So I'm sorry but I see your comment as the first one that is largely uncalled for.

As you so rightly said it is one persons opinion, You mentioned that you like hearing different sides of the story, So how can you say that my post is uncalled for if is just my opinion?

Besides which that comment was directed at my dad, How would you like it if I presumed something about your parents which was untrue?

You're welcome to your opinion and like everybody else on here you're welcome to state it. However it's unfair to brand an entire thread as full of bitching when as far as I can see it's simply about petrol heads discussing the whys and what nots of what is & isn't a muscle car. I'm also well aware that 60ftman is your dad as I've seen your connection to his car in the past. Furthermore Cmpod was not presuming anything about your father, nor was he in anyway questioning your dads obvious excellent knowledge, he was stating tongue in cheek that he lives and breathes American cars and motors too. As to why I stated that your post was uncalled for, simple it's a clear and direct insult.

I've No further comment to add about anything other than the threads original topic, US/UK muscle cars.

I’ve been looking forward to getting back from work and checking out everyone’s new comments on this thread. This thread has been of great interest to me and I’m sure to everyone else involved, and I think it’s a shame that things have now turned a little sour.

Kissmyrs your father seemed to be enjoying this discussion as much as everyone else. I’m sure that he had taken offence to the previous comment made by Vista RS he would have mentioned it. Personally I feel that your quote above wasn’t necessary to the discussion. It’s a shame you feel that several people enjoying a discussion about their passion for all things Ford should been seen as nothing more than a “Bitching session”.

Another sprang to mind this morning, Jag XJ6 and the equlivent Daimler,

Resurfaced as the XJ12 and Daimler Double 6,

And I suppose it fits the bill cos it is too big to be a sports car, Aston Martin DBS, then DBV8, and thru to the Vantage or Virage was it,
