Get it done! There is no way that that is a write off unless is bent the rails, if you could get a couple of quotes in writing and send them to your insurers along with photocopies of the classified ads highlighting the cars true value perhaps you could persuade them otherwise, if not then get it done yourself and jus say you fixed it and send them the bill. I dont see the point in insurance companies half the time all they do is take your money and give you nothing back. My mum had loads of work done on her fiesta a while back as a neighbour crashed into the front of her, then a bus hit it up the back (kids snowballed the windscreen, yet for some reason he wasnt going slow in the snow in residential area, anticipating the little shites would be playing with snowballs or think to press the brake when he couldnt see where he was going) and sent her flying up a kerb into a sign, yet the insurance company said it wasnt worth anything despite having agreed value  got a bit back but not much after months of threats. You can get it back mate don't worry, if I were you I'd get it done, then when they say to write it off send them the repair bill and tell em you fixed it

If garages are saying its a write off its either because something is bent beyond repair or they dont want the work. You need to find out which it is. Also you should be taking it to specialists for the quotes not just any old bodyshop. Most of them these days are complete shit so will look at an old escort as an old escort, not the classic we consider it to be. The womans insurance can write it off if the repair is over a certain amount. You can insist on it being repaired but if for example a specialist told you it would cost 3K to repair and you could buy another in the same or better condition for 2k we both know it aint gonna get repaired. I'd get in touch with her insurance company and get an assesor out to view it before I did anything. With any luck you can get it written off, get a payout for it and buy it back to get it repaired yourself. Thats what i'd be looking to do.

Good luck.

If the body is that tidy. Maybe even £2,300

Their value is going up 'n' up all the time. Even for us 4-door brigade now.

How does the car drive since the smash? Is it purely cosmetic damage?

Im no expert m8 but id say the same as antz probably closer to £2000,yours is a very nice car, just dont let them give you any crap m8

I wouldn't bother with quotes from the local bodyshops, most of them won't be interested. Go to a specialist, after all the youngest MK2 out there is 26 years old...

A mate of mine had an RS2000 (I think the new owner is an OSF member), a van pulled out on him & did damage. The assessor looked, scratched his head and left - they struck a deal where they paid out an agreed value & let my mate organise the repairs - he was up on the deal.

If it makes you feel any better I stacked my TVR a few years back, a gentle nerf of some armco, £16k to repair on an £18k car & it was still fixed without writing off.

Even if they say the rear chassis rails are done you can still get them & not that pricey either, boot floor and rear panel are expensive.

Have a chat to Escort Tec, they've normally got half cars knocking around & could easily graft one on. I'd offer you the rear panel out of a spare shell I have but the one you have is better....:shock:

Just a thought. The other driver wont want to get hit on her insurance, and you dont really want to get them involved. "have you had any claims in the last 5 years?" regularly pops up everywhere.

Ask her if she wants to settle without getting the insurance people involved. Ok she will still have to get her car sorted but it could be without the added expense of your insurance claiming off of hers.

Get her to pay you £500 (or more) which is really a bargain for her if you think about it, and then use that money to get yours fixed. I had a whole roof swap done a while ago for just a few hundred more than that.

They YOU dont need to get your insurers involved at all.

Like I said, just a thought.
