BaileyMex Posted April 28, 2025 Report Posted April 28, 2025 So, it looks like I need a new steering rack, and struggling to find something at a semi reasonable price. I need a long stem steering rack which by all accounts only came on the MK1 Mexico and Twin Cam (could be corrected on that) Gartrac do a full bolt on assembly including VAT and delivery for £513.54 > LINK HERE Burton's look to offer what is a Quaife rebuild kit for £382.80 + delivery > LINK HERE And MST suggest their supplier can make one for £474.00 + delivery Apart from the above, I haven't come across anything else online, has anyone got any other idea's or suggestions on what might fit or who might be able to help? I'd still want a quick rack rather than standard turn.
BIG G Posted April 29, 2025 Report Posted April 29, 2025 (edited) I wouldn't say £513.54 is that bad Colin to be honest, think how much a rack would be for a modern sports car let alone a set of tyres? Edited April 29, 2025 by BIG G

Must be showing my age Gordy, mind you, I've always been tight hahahaha Just sounded a lot for something classic, totally get the cost for one on a 'new' car with all the electric gizmo's they put on them these days

Miniliteman Posted April 29, 2025 Report Posted April 29, 2025 AFAIK Capri is different to Escort. Get a quality item (Gartrac or Quaife), have seen lower priced racks that wear out quickly. For me a 2.2 ratio is too heavy, 2.5 is ideal.

Admin Vista Posted April 29, 2025 Admin Report Posted April 29, 2025 Have you looked at having yours reconditioned Col? There's a place near me that offers rack reconditioning, they have their own eBay store thst you could reach out to them through. https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/kellybraysteeringracks?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=3epNc0KvS8O&sssrc=3418065&ssuid=&store_cat=5673938&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY 1
BaileyMex Posted April 30, 2025 Author Report Posted April 30, 2025 I did think about it, but thinking of downtime. Ideally a quick up in the air swap would be ideal to avoid the car being up on ramps for weeks waiting for a rebuild, but good shout though.
BaileyMex Posted May 1, 2025 Author Report Posted May 1, 2025 Bit the bullet and ordered the complete unit from Gartrac.😁 Should get it in a week or two, still need to order TRE's

Reconditioning can generally be next day if you tell them your desperate and leaving for a show tomorrow lol.
BaileyMex Posted May 2, 2025 Author Report Posted May 2, 2025 I think the image shown is a MK2 Escort one, but pic for reference only 👍
