JUST READ A THREAD REFENCE THIS.THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE A GOOD TOPIC

A few personal thoughts on this.. I use to race a while back, now i appriciated an OSF. However thats how i got interested in Grannys then the rest followed. I still go and watch racing now and again. I beleive if the car is not road worthy ie: un-restorable - beond repair its a spectacular send off. I have over the years found banger racers most helpful in parts, mechanical help.

On the other hand, i totally disagree with MINT cars going on the track. I watched the BONEBUSTER last year. A bloke had a MINT MK1 Granny. He even painted MINT on the rear. Totally unexeptable. This is a cat amongst the pidgeons thread, i know. But i follow the OSF. But, if its time for the breakers yard....give her a good send off.

I used to race as well, maybe its not right as pretty much any car is saveable given the motivation, but any motorsport is risky for the vehicle, the classic rally boys often destroy mk1 shells for example.

If something is particulally rare it usually prices itself outside a banger racers budget anyway so i dont have a problem with it, you cant start dictating what people can do with a car they own however much you want to save something.

i'm sure if you wandered into the pits and waved enough money about you could buy any of the cars in there so we are not talking about priceless cars dissapearing, just CHEAP cars dissapearing.

Good subject, bound to ruffle a few feathers...

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. As long as the cars are aquired by legitimate means, its up to the owner to do what he/she wants with it. There was an A60 Cambridge advertised for bangering on ebay a while back... in the questions someone had basicaly said it was sacralige and should be restored... the seller had replied that A: he was already busy restoring a Westminister, and B: why don't you pony up the cash and buy it to restore yourself if you're so concerned...?

Don't forget that a fresh coat of paint can make any car look good...

Another point is that people who modify old cars, i.e us, are often acused of 'ruining' them... to which we reply "it's my car, I'll do what I like with it"

One last thing, years ago I bought a V4 Corsair for £70 that had been sat in a garage for 9 years with the engine in pieces... a week after I'd bought the previous owner was ringing up asking if I'd done anything with it... some poeple have more concern for a car after they've sold it... :?

Sadly (though I readily accept that this is the exception rather than the rule) there is a small but particularly nasty element within banger racing that appears to have taken to stealing the cars they want. Unfortunately this tarnishes the name of the sport for all the many bonafide honest participants

As the cars that banger racers want become increasingly recognised as classics, I reckon this problem will only get worse. People can & will restore cars from virtually any condition now so as the market drys up of cheap and plentiful big saloons, what will happen then?

Is there any governing body that makes any kind of checks on the cars that turn up at Banger circuits? If not, given the recent publicity about cars being stolen specifically for banger racing is it time there should be some sort of scrutineering?

The old bill does turn up now and again to meets. How ever, steeling another mans property is WRONG!

Some may argue that an element of making an 'afordable classic' is down to them. For example, Granada MK2. There use to be in the region of 50 + each w/e getting smashed up. Now they are thin on the ground. i am not so white myself, but they use to be easy to come by. At the moment on ebay a bloke is claiming that he has a 'rare' 2.8 ghia and is one of 250 that is on the road (ex SORN - STORED examples). I dont know how true this is, but they are hard to find. I am grateful to own my 7th. I will ensure that she remains on the road and never on the track. Some MK2's are going for £200-300 pound just to race! MADNESS at its best i tell you.

i know people who race + they wreck some salvageable cars without a doubt. they would rather race a stronger car than a rusty one,+ most of them dont care what us lot think!. take the hearses for example they fold up in about 2 mins + they are finished. some nice mk1 grannys have gone for the sake of 2 laps, whats the point of that they are so rare now. i wouldnt mind so much if they got 10 races out of them but of course the demolition derby means that wont happen.i would love to have another mk1 granny but as i live in a normal street with no garage i know the car would be taken + never seen again, i wish it wasnt like this but you have to be realistic. i dont want to upset any racers on here but can any of you hand on heart say you dont know anyone that would not take a car off the street if they wanted to race. dont even get me started on rover p5's i know someone who had a lovely one + that vanished one night. it used to be normal car thiefs you had to worry about but at least you stood a chance of getting them back, they should make banger racers only use post 1990 jap crap as nobody is going to worry about them, but that will never happen so we will have to watch all our cars NONE ARE SAFE!!!! :(:(:(:(:(

Went to ST DAY to the BONESHAYKER. Shit loads of Jap crap. 2 Cappers, 2 Tina (mk5) And - - A MK5 CORTINA CAMPER VAN!! Rocking horse doo doo. They had a 1800 CVH in it (standard) i think, and it is (was) made of fibre glass. The thing exploded in to a million pieces. Its not like a MK2 Granny hurse where the front is steel. The bloke is a complete nugget to race it. He did get the most unusual car thow. I have a pic on my phone. i f any one wants it i will text it, i am away at work so i cant down load it on to my PC. (chris 07825254245) Cheers

Me and my brother have given away loads of rotten OSFs to banger racers in the past. Some were so bad that even they couldn't be raced because they were like tea bags.

I'm a brolly dolly at my local track and quite often have a good look around before the racing starts. Most of the stuff down our neck of the woods is knackered so I don't throw a hissy when I see it smashed up at the end.

We got Pre 1975 Bangers on the 22 April so will have a look see what turns up.

The banger boys down our way are brilliant for sourcing parts for our road goers

It's not all bad, went down to Lifton earlier & en route we passed a Lada going to die at St Day on the back of a transporter

And she did as well. The LADA was pushed down the straight and in to the wall. The thing SNAPPED like a KITKAT!! !!HAPPY DAYS!!!

Went to Brafield at the weekend primarily to see the Classic Hot Rods.... but to my total shock I loved the bangers, there was a guy in a MkII Granada, number 998 and he was on it all day.... every race he was there, full on.

Far more exciting than the Classic Hot Rods, which didnt 'hot' up until the last race of the day.

I think there are some 'unscrupulous' banger boys who have been known to take cars specifically for racing rather than sourcing them from breakers etc because lets face it, when did you last see a MkII Granada or whatever in the local rag for £50...... and not many yards have these cars anymore either.

But I think after Monday I'm converted..
