I have seen some escorts with the turrets mounted slightly angled inwards. Any particular reason for this?? I thought the idea was to get the shocks totally vertical? :thumbsup:

id imagine slightly angles is a bit sturdier, perhaps they didnt have any axle location so they tried to add a bit by angling the shocks.

I can't belive this hasn't bought up more discussion and theories.. i was hoping a few would sit down and think about why the turrets are angled inboard.

 

So come on ... quiz for the day, no googling, just sit and think about it .. get a paper and pen and draw it out and do both types .. straight and angled slightly, look whats happening..... think.

 

 

anyone that knows the correct answer ..keep it to yourselves, i want peoples theories and ideas... to think before copying. Use the brains that you all have to think it through.

 

Dont worry if you think your answer is daft..throw it in the mix, most daft ideas can be worked into brillient plans.. it was daft to think of spacefilght..

 

none of the above answers are correct.. and Ricks one is heading in a direction that Ford used on early Escorts.. but you need steep angles to offer any sideways loacation. Upright dampers will just pendulum and offer no sideways resistance. But he thought about :thumbsup:

Hhhmmmm.

 

I would think that mounting turrets inwards would automatically give you Negative camber. But, you can get adjustable TCA's :?

 

So, either they do it for more over exaggerated negative camber for racing, or maybe it's for the same reason, but for fitting bigger wheels without fouling standard arches??? :?:D

I thought they were angled to give camber and castor

You lean em in towards the centre of the car slightly to aid with camber and tilt em back so the tops more towards the rear than the fronts to aid castor which helps self centre steering amongst other things

 

Perfect castor examples the later escorts

Drive a MK5 then drive a MK6 the mk6 has the front struttops about an inch further back and it improves the handling no end

for oval racing where the tracks are angled on corners?

 

i know a lot of people adjust the wheels for this kinda thing but maybe it was built specifically for this.

 

on my old axle the shocks were mounted on different sides of the axle too ie: one front one back which brought about the same theory....

 

thats my guessing now im all out

Does the turrets being angled coincide with the natural movement of the axle as it passes over bumps? I suppose if you were looking at the axle from the rear it tries to rotate as the suspension compresses/decompresses. Therefore if the turrets are angled, they can cope with this movement a lot better.

Ok...when your cornering hard the axle moves around a point closer to the centre of the axle keeping the tyre flat on the road hence more grip as the car body rolls....possibly?

does it prevent axle tramp a highten the grip to the wheels by the pressure of the weight of the car goig directly in the line of the shock while accelerating like a mountain bike when it brakes??????? :oops:

Is it to counter one wheel bump when cornering etc???

I think it would follow the arc of the wheel movement better??

Sounds like it'd make the sus' work better thru a corner,

Think how a shock's mounted on the swing arm of a motor bike,

 

With the weight of the car on that wheel the car would

in theory corner flatter thus reducin body roll, by how much, I dunno,

and the outside wheel (weight bearing one),the angle is steepened,

therefore getting the most out of a shock where it matters on a circuit.

Have a look at the drawing and see what is happening .. think of loads and what is doing the pushing ... where are the loads coming from and where are the going too. What has happened to the damper by inclining it ?

I will say this...

 

A steeply inclined damper is loosing effectiveness, and mor so the flater it goes .. take a 45 degree damper .. the axle moves 1 inch the damper moves 1/2 an inch.. yhats why we want them vertical or near vertical. the more stroke the better the damper works.

 

Race cars with bell cranks have 2:1 ratios or more ... wheel moves 1 inch damper moves 2 .

 

Gareth has a point about the dampers moving vertical through roll, hes thinking about, but its really is simpler than that .

Some of the load on the damper when hitting a bump is being transferred sideways rather than straight down on the axle so the axle doesn't break?
