J_mk1 Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 I was going to go for zetec power on carbs for my escort but im starting to change my mind... (again) choices are: Zetec: will cost a fair bit to get all the bits to install and tune, but once its done its done. even if the engine blows, another is only about £250 Cossy: will cost about £1500 hundred quid. but would i have to change the axle, g/box tunnel etc??? Tuned pnto: not too sure on this, becuase it seems alot of people do it but after seeing some hot ones at cf show it got me pondering lol. so what do u lot reckon? thanks for any advice
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 i voted pinto they are proper olskool engines give plenty of power loads you can do to them and cheaper
X-pack-Glyn Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 i voted pinto too, if they were crap engines they would have died years ago BUT i spoke to kent who are now making more cams for them than ever, true its a heavy old thing, but they are bulletproof and reliable.
Twinkle Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 cost wise a pinto is the cheapest option, a cossie will cost a shed load more than £1500, just ask andygfc to see his recently inflated credit card bill, zetec is like you say costly at first but replacement engines are cheap, if you want to do the zetec on a tight budget pm hermy bee, he has done his for about £5.68 and a bit of fluff he had knocking about

Admin Vista Posted June 15, 2007 Admin Report Posted June 15, 2007 i could always speak to my ron harris and get a hot pinto but then how driveable is a 190bhp pinto?? Plenty of other hot pinto builders to choose from, shop around before making your decision. As to how driveable, I'm not sure mine is 190bhp (going on the Road next week now it's run in) but I don't reckon it's too far from it and it's quite manageable, a little lumpy at idle but otherwise fine.

Admin Vista Posted June 15, 2007 Admin Report Posted June 15, 2007 Mine was done by JRE, probably a bit far west for you but he's top notch and builds engines with race winning pedigree. www.jreracingengines.com I'll quote a OSF regular chassis builder (without naming him as that's his call) as stating that Johns XE's are so powerful that he has to alter the cars to suit them.
johnny_h Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 How about a twin crossflow? One in the front and one in the back. High revving cheap tuneabilty and it will still weigh the same as a pinto
Admin Mk2Jo Posted June 15, 2007 Admin Report Posted June 15, 2007 I have a pinto in mine .... was built for me by ASHTON MOBILE SERVICES I was racing at Santa Pod this week-end too Mine is 2.1 with twin 48's and sounds the dogs (even if I say so myself) Ashton Mobile is Colin Ashton (V6Col). PM him on here or phone him on: 0208 669 6092 He is based in Sarf London Can't praise his work enough Standard pinto with single carb (BEFORE) 2.1 race pinto built by Ashton mobile (AFTER)
Doc Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 id go pinto mate for sure , i heard Jos snarling and popping away ..loved it ! Im going to get a V6 built by Ashton methinks
Jay_harrier Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 it all depends what you want to do with the car & how much power you want in the future. Old school motors are great if that's the way you want your car to be, pintos are solid but don't set my world alight - I can't wait to turn mine into a boat anchor. It'll be cheaper to do a pinto than the cosworth but it'll be a close run thing for a decent pinto vs a mild zetec on cost. And the Lotus dress up kit on a zetec in any car looks the mutts.
angliaalan Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 IF YOU CAN FABRICATE THE PARTS OR MOST OF THEM YOUSELF GO FOR THE ZETEC IF YOU CANT DO THE FABRICATION GO FOR THE PINT AND IT LOOK REAL OID SKOOL
