mk1super Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 Ok went to bank today got days mixed up thought it was monday Anyways folks i need your help. Bank said they can give me a loan no real probs to get a car. Here is the problem. I would be using the car every day, so it needs to be realiable and easy to get parts for and cheap to maintain and cheap to insure. The car would be parked on the street. Now iam torn between a Mk1 escort, a mk1 fiesta, or be boring and very practical and go for a jelly mould of some kind, but dont poor scorn on me i must be practical and need realiable transport. Wisdom advice etc feel free i need it.
Twinkle Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 i use my mk2 every day for work with no problems, comfy reliable, fun to drive and even economical
FlashCadillac Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 IMO (other may disagree) if your wanting a daily driver id say away from mk1 escorts/capris/cortinas they arnt reliable unless you look after it, which most people dont with the daily drivers. if you need the car to get you to work and it would leave you up sh*t creek if its not working then you dont want something too old id say you stand a better chance with a mk4/5 cortina, mk3 capri, mk1 fiesta... although a littl small for some... depending what you mean by practical... wont be getting loads of gear in it and a loads of mates personally id go for a 2.0S mk3 capri
omj624p Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 I love my mk2's to bits but wouldnt dream of using them as daily drivers. Occasionally when the weather is nice I may use them for work, and I always end up wondering why I bothered. They just dont seem suited to the job of being used for work. However, regular weekend/evening use, and they are perfect
john_3.0s Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 the mechanics on any escort / capri and early fiesta are basically the same and need the same level of maintenance. personally id get something a bit more modern but thats just me and of course it depends on what kind of commute you have each day. as much as i like the OSFs its nice to wack the aircon on hammering down the outside lane in 5th knowing you will get to your destination at 40 to the gallon still.....and yes i have had an osf as a commuter for 2 years and loved every minute of it!

Its about 2 miles to work so not far, but when you its icy or theres snow and you have to walk it, feels like 200 miles lol
mk2_escort_chick Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 My mk1 fezzy is my daily drive-but i'll be going bk 2 my renault from next month *hopefully*, as jelly is coming off the road for her rebuild. Tbh I havent had much trouble with the fez. Some days she takes a lil while to start, but other than that i love driving her. Have a look on flea-bay, for sale on here, auto-trader etc to see whats available in ur price range
johnny_h Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 Get yourself a nice looked after low mileage mk1 fez. Cheap, cool and economical.
Messenjah Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 they are all cheap to get parts for if they are pinto engined because most motor factors still stock or can get in a couple of houst mos tengine parts ! i used a mk3 capri as a daily drive for a 25 mile each way commute everyday for almost a year and with other driviing i racked up about 18k miles and only once did i have to ge tthe train to work ...
mk2_escort_chick Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 When I was looking for an osf- it was out of a mk3 caper and a mk1 fezzy pop. The fezzy just came along 1st
sab6024 Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 Up until my brother gave me a Scorpio I was using my Capri everyday for work and she was doing 30,000 miles a year....poor girl! Never had any problems and bits weren't hard to come by if I did need anything doing. I would still be using it now but someone hit me in it and I got paranoid, although the repair work was done But then I suppose it's a risk no matter what you drive
sambo Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 2 miles to commute! Get what ever you want mate, that is not far and any osf will handle it on a daily basis surely?!. I used my mk1 1200 deluxe cortina for a daily car for ages. just get some thing cool!!
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 i use my cortina as a daily driver and my wife has a mk2 fiesta as a daily driver but i cant afford another car so thats one reason it depends like otheres have said how prepaired you are to look after it old cars do need tlc but youre only going 4 miles a day so if you get what you really have your heart set on and give it a good service and overall check shouldnt be too much of a problem remember new cars break down too
X-pack-Glyn Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 If you dont use it no point having it....... build em hard and drive em hard i say.... you want a show car? get a garage and a trailer.
Burns Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 i deliver pizzas in my mk1 fiesta, so about 500 miles a week, as others have said as long as you look after it, it'll just keep going. i've had a few problems with mine, but nothing i couldn't fix myself and for a shade over £100 you can't go wrong
