kev16v Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 ive got one an ive towed everywere with it motorways a roads never had any probs at all. an a lot of the time ive had oldskool on them an we all know the get lots of looks from everyone including the police. so if there were any problems using them i think i would have been stop an i never have
FlashCadillac Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 yeah but reading theough the regs... there's nothing legal about them! unless you happen to have broken down
bortaf Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 yeah but reading theough the regs... there's nothing legal about them! unless you happen to have broken down pretty much spot on they where a "grey" area in the law that has recently been cleared up and tightened up on. Got pulled a few times with mine so sold it and got another recovery truck
kev16v Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 i'll be using mine untill they tell me different then will probley use it some more they still make them, sell em,so if they can do that i'll still use it
mossy Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Ive towed shit loads of stuff with my a-frame... did 120 miles on the motorway with the estate..no probs was even pulled by old bill to say a light was out...No comment was made about towing!
russ105e Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Was looking into getting one but they are illegal.Think problems will arise if invoved in an accident or stopped by VOSA.
capriclive Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 ive been using an a- frame for a few years now. towed cars from all over the place. been on motorways loads of times. even use it to tow scrap (stripped) cars to weigh in. never had a problem with the law. always use a proper trailer board with tow vehicle reg on it then towed vehicle is classed as a trailer.

kevmk2 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Petrolhead and Jay with his mk1 escort cossie have had problems with their gearboxes after using an A frame to tow their cars. Maybe you have to tow them slower on the motorway or something.
FlashCadillac Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 well its not ment to be in gear or an auto for that matter
kevmk2 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 It wasnt in gear They just couldnt select any gears after towing them.
flyingbanana Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 ive only had to use mine twice since i got it and that was to collect a project with hour drive back and moving my mates capri towing with the escort and didnt have no problems with the law...because i didnt see any
Fiesta Steve Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Petrolhead and Jay with his mk1 escort cossie have had problems with their gearboxes after using an A frame to tow their cars. Maybe you have to tow them slower on the motorway or something. Recovery boys always pull a half shaft for some reason, manual or auto
mossy Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 as said above...ive towed stripped cars to the scrappy before with no hassles. As long as a trailer board is used and you stick to the speed limits then you shouldnt have any problems.
bigrsjay Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 well if any of you dont like using a dolly etc etc ive always got a recovery truck

Me too, towed mine all the way to Shakey, having driven it into the garage the night before fine, reversed it out fine, got to Shakey, Fooked box!! The gears spin on the main shaft, but the lay shaft isn't spinning so no oil is getting splashed over the moving parts. James Harris, same thing. We remove our props now which is a real shag...... Of couse the lower the diff ratio the faster the prop spins in the un-lubricated gears at any given tow speed. Appart from that they're good!

I think you will find that it is a grey issue with your insurance cover, ie you wont be covered. In europe they are banned, especially in France, a friend of mine who has a Fiesta that he tows behind his Motorhome, & has done for years with a A frame was done, & the French Gendarmerie, was sympathetic & let him carry on. Which is unusual for the french law enforcers.!! He now has a new frame which has a braking system on it, which is acceptable. Jeff Harris

Jeff Harris im fairly certain that all 4 wheels on the floor have to have powerd brakes
Toby Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 how far you going with it? What the dolly?

Maybe you have to tow them slower on the motorway or something. Recovery boys always pull a half shaft for some reason, manual or auto they always take the prop off at the diff end for this reason but thought it was a comercal vehicle thing rather than cars. but come tho think about it most cars are picked up on flatbeds than specs?
steve dray Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Did loads of miles towin my Anglebox on the A frame last year without a single problem, never had an issue with the law or the gearbox!! Must admit though I am looking for a braked trailer. I think it will be much safer
bortaf Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 im fairly certain that all 4 wheels on the floor have to have powerd brakes they will with the cable operated A frame it pushes the pedel down in the car
