ratman Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I only broke 1 standard english 1/2 shaft when my rear axel was in my starlet + the pinto in the tina and that was with 10x13 soft yoko slicks and that was I got womped in the side when 5 of us tryed to go around a corner designed for 3 its an odd fealing when a 10x13 compmotive & slick overtakes you and you think hay thats mine 3 wheels on my waggon
Toby Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 group 1 18 teeth atlas shafts and tranx diff with the side gears to suit. and they are as big as needed!! lol the only weak link then is the crown wheel and pinion. But they only tend to go if not setup right thats it mate What they said Quaiffe do a standard diameter replacement shaft thats not supposed to be as good as the originals. The diameter of the shaft is used times 4 in the strength equation I found on shafts on the net ages ago, strange said they could make stronger ones at the standard diameter but the best way to go is up in diameter. Gaz wallet!! Tran-X diff, with the big side gears, and 18t shafts. I have broken at least 3 standard shafts, You're most likely to break them on launch. Most turbo's seem to be more gentle on the shafts cos they come up onto the power so it's not so snatchy on the poor shafts.
Darran Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 group 1 18 teeth atlas shafts and tranx diff with the side gears to suit. and they are as big as needed!! lol the only weak link then is the crown wheel and pinion. But they only tend to go if not setup right thats what i'm running but have never broke a standard shaft in any of my escorts.
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 So 18 tooth group 1 two piece shafts with tran-x lsd with big side gears then , fully floating bearings for the ends or not ? . sounds about £1100 then !!!!!!!!
w p e Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 aint broke a shaft in 27yrs of owning the old shed. prehaps it aint quick enough to break standard 997cc original shafts
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 but have never broke a standard shaft in any of my escorts.this seems to be the norm mate
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 aint broke a shaft in 27yrs of owning the old shed. prehaps it aint quick enough to break standard 997cc original shafts and another one with bullet proof standard shafts
MK2Ed Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Keep the wallet in the sky rocket Gaz... As long as you don't run slicks it seems you'll be OK...
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 A trailer is even cheaper than an uprated english axle is !!!!!!!!
Fiesta Steve Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I think vehicle weight has something to do with it. With all your comfy bits Gaz, your fooked
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I think vehicle weight has something to do with it. Now this is what i reckon Steve . If mine hooks up off the line with sticky rubber then i'm fooooooked big time as my cars 900+ kilos (but comfy + warm) and this must strain the shafts more than a 750 kilo lightweight motor would
w p e Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 A trailer is even cheaper than an uprated english axle is !!!!!!!! you know you want one gaz
Rick Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 save your money on upgrading and buy a load of standard shafts as spares. you can change a shaft in 20 mins no probs better than emptying the bank
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 A trailer is even cheaper than an uprated english axle is !!!!!!!! you know you want one gaz it would get pinched after 5 mins around here
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I was a bit worried about breaking my van shafts (as they're a bit harder to come by) when I do the OSFDC this year... But I think now I'm going to relax after reading all that...
Guest MK1gaz Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 So the only people to break a standard halfshaft so far have been using slicks and a locker . The shafts have broken on a hard standing start on a grippy start line at the Pod . Anyone broken one on the street with a proper L.S.D. then ?
Anglia68 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 When you take the half-shafts out for whatever reason make sure you put them back in the same side as after years of them being twisted one way they are more prone to break if asked to twist the other way.I guess it's down to work hardening. I broke the diff gears in my old van pulling away from a pedestrian crossing once.
Toby Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Anyone broken one on the street with a proper L.S.D. then ? Plate LSD and standard shafts at Pod. Never broken one anywhere other than Pod. I know what Ricks saying about it being a 20 minute job, but the ones I've twisted off have knackered the end bearing location on the diff and fooking it (them). You can't always get the broken bit out either, so take a spare diff too even if it's not a slipper - at least you can drive it home then. I know a a least 2 shaft snapping escorts, I've seen a shaft snapping Anglia and I know a very nice, kind, funny, handsome Mk1 Cortina owner who has broken a few!!
Toby Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 So 18 tooth group 1 two piece shafts with tran-x lsd with big side gears then , fully floating bearings for the ends or not ? Yes but not fully floating - I think they're for the big tyre boys with loads of side loading, rallying etc. Just the two piece jobbies. I think the "floaters" sit out further so spoil tyre clearances for the "Saaf London" look.
slappy Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 just drive it like you hate it until it breaks, then build it bigger and better old drag racing style.
MK2Ed Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 and I know a very nice, kind, funny, handsome Mk1 Cortina owner who has broken a few!!
MK2Ed Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Keep the wallet in the sky rocket Gaz... As long as you don't run slicks it seems you'll be OK... I think I know your train of thought here Gaz... If you hook up on the line with sticky rubber and sticky pod surface and fooooook the shafts on the first run of OSFDC , keyboards around the UK are going to be melting with furious action... Consequently I take back earlier statement and it may be worth shelling out an a pair of 2 piece shafts or similar for insurance, just in case... Or of course take some spare sets of 1100's to help partly rescue the situation...
