Hi Guys

I have now picked up my new engine:

Its a 1700 Crossflow only done 100 miles since rebuild:

- Its been lightened and balanced

- Twin 40's

- 4 Branch Manifold

- Luminition Ignition

- Ported and polished

- Big Valve Head

- Steel Rocker Posts

- Double Valve Springs

- Jeff Howe Cam

It was built to spec by a company called Naismiths in Croydon (S.E London).

It is 140BHP at the flywheel.

Only thing i am not sure on is the company who built the engine i have never heard of them and also i cant hear the engine run which i would really like to before i part with £500

Right okay Google is my friend

Found the company and they have been established since 1949 so i guess that says it all really so if he has receipts for the work i think i will snap this one up

I have a good question though if its been bored to 1700cc does that mean it cannot be rebuilt again when its worn out or am i wrong in saying that :?

1700 is the biggest safe bore.

Jeff Howe (if that's who's cam it is :? ) hasn't been around for years so the cam could well have been around for a long time, possibly a bit dated profile?

I remember Jeff Howe exhausts? they were around in the early nineties and had a place in West Kingsdown near Brands Hatch.

That's him! He used to be the only one I knew who stocked pre-crossflow exhaust manifolds about 20 years ago!! I am sure one of my friends mentioned he had a Jeff Cam in one of his engines.

I think Jeff - if it's the same Jeff - had an advert in one of the CCC books on tuning Small Fords.

The engine does seem good value, but how long has it been sitting and how well has it been "moth balled"?

My first engine in the Cortina came out of an Anglia which had sat for years but was absolutely fine. Good luck

I deffinitly am interested but i just dont want to get stitched on it

Just wanna make sure its all okay before i spend £500 which is a lot of money to me :roll:

I think if he hasnt got receipts for the work then its possible a bit iffy because i am sure if you had work carried out by an engineering firm you would have receipts for it

absolute bargin, you wouldnt get close to building that for 500, the carbs and manifold are worth most of that alone

tell me about it :roll::lol:

id whip the head off and check everything inside looks good

Personally if he's claiming 140bhp, I'd want to see some proof of that, because thats a pretty tasty crossflow if its true. Still worth the 500 whether its that or not though to be honest.

So are they not around any more then (Jeff Howe) :?

His firm isn't, as far as I know, and I'm sure if he himself is or not....I remember him being quite old when I was 17, although to be fair I thought everyone over 30 was old!!

As suggested but...

Why don't you offer to pay for gaskets and ask to remove the head and centre main bearing. This way you can check the bores and if there has been an oil issue it will probably affect the centre main first.

You could end up £40 out of pocket or have a winning engine for £540

Geof Howe has been dead for 25 years++, His wife was the most amazing webber person I have ever come accross, she used to set the carbs, I had webber trouble, went down to see her, she made me a Cuppa, started the car had a listen, went for a drive, had another listen and look, went in the office, pulled out jets and tubes, from the little plastic drawer rack, fitted them reset the timing [by ear] went for another drive, there you are Sonny, thats fine, She learnt how to do this cos she was Geofs mechanic when he used to race his anglias, She tried running the exhaust buisness with her son when Geof died, but it want belly up shortly afterwards, Im fairly certain geof used to get his cams made at Newmans, I know she is long gone too, The pair of them, real eccentrics, but they were a amazing pair, Unfortunatly, I can remember a few of them and worked with a couple as well,
