emu Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 It'll only take you a morning to sling it into your car. It could be in and running by lunchtime tomorrow. Get it in and see how it runs. Seems silly to give up on a potentially good engine for a good price just because its a bit dirty. As people have said prviously.... If it comes to the worst then you'll get your money back from selling the bits.
Savvi Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Fire it up on the floor, i did with this one, which i offered you a while back.
Col-ashtonmobile Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 ok mate i,ll clear a few points up for you, donald naismith moved from croydon to wimbledon and is still tradind today, i speak to him most weeks and believe me he is a top top man, your engine has probably been in an oval or grass track race car cos that what donald specialises in, and yes it would have a blanking plate so,s to run an electric pump for the twin carbs, and he does often bolt in the core plugs, he is very flexable on price so probably done it on a budget so would not bother dressing the engine up with paint especially if was gonna race round some dirty oval track hope this helps

So im guessing he brought it from the guy that raced it and its more than likely done its work am i right im saying that?

Col-ashtonmobile Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 well you cant condem it until you hear it run , that,s the story with 2nd hand engines from strangers, you either hear it running first or be prepared to strip it down, if you want me to look over it for you i,m only too glad to help
5hane Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 correct me if im wrong? arnt raced or 'stressed' blocks better? nbecause there good enought to last all that time without breaking?

If your that bothered about it then whip the sump and head off and look at the bores and bearings. But that will take as long as bolting it in and running up the road. You couldnt build the engine for £500 so why worry about whether it was in a carpeted road car or a stripped out race car?? Even if it was only ever used in a road car, theres no guarentee that its been looked after. ie. Missed oil changes, thrashed from cold. At least if its an ex-race engine then you have a good chance that its been cared for. as hopefully the owner would have checked all the levels and warmed it up properly before the races.
72mk1escort Posted October 11, 2008 Author Report Posted October 11, 2008 Im going to try and get my money back today and if he wont then i guess i will have to put it in and see what it is actually like
escort21 Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Bloody hell man the carbs etc are worth it for that sort of cash just freshen up the bottom end
tim Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Im going to try and get my money back today and if he wont then i guess i will have to put it in and see what it is actually like bolt it in and try it,like been said before if its not good, stripe it and sell it in bits for alot more than £500
Messenjah Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 if you go and get your money back before evne whipping the head and sump off and having a look let alone hearing it run you are a damn fool
escort new boy Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 because the engines dirty you think its gonna be shit? Pistons are gonna black if its been run for a bit. Rusty water has probably just built up whilst its been sitting!
morcheen Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 if he wont give you a refund try to get a large chunk of it back,as has been said x-flows are as tuff as nails, and parts available everywhere second hand.i got a mex lup off a mate 6 or 7 years back, left it out in the open uncovered, put in in my bruvs van earlier this year after a quick strip down, hone new bearings and a hot cam, runs no problem
NginEEr Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 ive just bought a 1600 xflow and it looks scruffy outside and the head was black a quick wipe down and it looks to be in great condition all the bores are mint etc etc
Daggle Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 At least give it a run to see what its like , I can't believe you aren't even gonna try it out to see what it's like. Then if it runs alright, tart it up with a can of smoothrite
mk1super Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 I'd get it in an run it up the road, bet it doesnt disapoint, mines never has just the bleedin electrics thats been a bugger
Doc Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 caveat emptor mate , let the buyer beware ! Just get it running mate stop bieng a girl about it , the geezer will probably tell you to fook off anyhow ! get the thing botled in and thrashed or get big col to give it the once over
john_3.0s Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 what did you expect for that money? still sounds like a bargain, just stick it in, or sell it on for profit
jed Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 mate your getting all that for 500 and your umming n arring i got a 1650 xflow all singing and dancin an i spent 800 on just having it freshened up wot your getting is for nothing
Rick Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 il give you £400 for it mate i can collect tomoz
caprinerd Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 what you got to remember here is if the engine was use for oval racing its run at high revs , its either full or no throttle so the top of the pistons will look black on a personal thought my idea would be to do what everyone else is saying drop it in and fire it up run it down the road and see how it reacts to driving dont condemn the engine because its dirty, s**t wipes off its like not buying a car because it has dirt on it, it dont work like that. A mate of mine just bought a 105E for 500 quid there was moss growing on it where its been stood so long we washed it of and its really solid and the engine is a 1500 pre x flow fresh petrol and good battery and she fired up and runs a dream, so dont knock the engine untill you try it m8 you aint got anything to lose excepted a day putting and taking out if its a knocker and put some pics up of it
walsh253 Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 just wondered,if the block was painted a nice shiney colour would you be on here moaning?? or would you be telling us what a bargain you have got? If you bring back to the bloke and he asks did you have it running what are you gonna say?
