Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Following on from my "Having A Tinker" thread, where I mention I have made Carburettor floats out of wine bottle corks etc. It has got me thinking... What problems or mechanical faults have you fixed using unorthodox methods or parts to get you out of trouble??? BTW, my wine bottle cork float has now been replaced with a proper float
Admin Vista Posted January 14, 2009 Admin Report Posted January 14, 2009 I fixed the lube oil gear wheel pump on a hydraulic oil centrifuge by cutting the side out of a square plastic bucket and reproducing the seal plate between the suction and delivery pump gears out of a double thickness of the bucket. Worked a treat and was still going strong 4 months later when the ship got back to the UK. Sometimes the best engineering is the stuff you are forced to think up on the hoof to keep you running.
MexDan Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 My Uncle and I were out on a "road" rally, and after taking off for the umpteenth time, the front right strut burst through the top of the strut plate.. So we ended up "borrowing" a farmers fence and bodged the post so that the strut stayed roughly in place and then limped to the finish... Were leading at the time... Ended up 12th.. but won spirit of the rally award so all was good..
bigdaz27 Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 the throtle cable snapped on my taxi out side harods and i had to get back to oxford and i wasnt going to pay £250 to get back so i weged the bonnet open a little and tyide my shoe lace to the throtle under the bonnet and pulled the other end with my arm out the window i had to stop about 6 times on the way back
johnny_h Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 The mex came to a complete halt on a deserted country road and I discovered the rotor arm somehow smashed the dizzy cap into several parts! After a quick search I managed to find a tube of superglue and a cable tie in the car. 10 mins later we managed to drive home!
oliver Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I was driving to cardiff once and all of a sudden the mk1 stopped quick check over and found a snapped set of points. Quick rummage through my ash tray and 1 paper clip later clipped it to the point arm. Drove 20 miles on that lol.
Messenjah Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 snapped points fixed with a lolly stick and insulating tape snapped throttle cable at the pedal end so i put some mole grips on the end off and took my shoe off and had a toe either side of the cable pushing down on the grips got me from chester to galway tht was in the landy throttle cable snapped on the cari but was long enough for me to do the arm out the window trick ... lol fixed a hole in the top hose on my capper with damp proof course instant gasket and cable ties exhaust fell off at a meet so i tied it up with my belt that stayed there because i forgot about it lol door catch broke on the landy so i had the door held shit with a bungee chord round the gearstick and across my lap that was fun ... lol

When we took our old motor home to watch rally germany the exhaust fell off. So when we got there we kept it together with a bean tin, barbeque and some wire. It was noicey but it stayed on!
vibrating_Cake Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 in my old car the clutch cable snapped clean off in liverpool.... i live near leeds..... got home though!! and the starter motor survived starting the car in 1st, and everytime i went wrong, doing a 3pt turn my ramming the car into gear (clutchless) and starting the engine, pulling me around, same again etc.. rolled upto every set of traffic lights hoping i didnt slow down enough to go into 1st (as it wouldnt do that without a clutch pedal for some reason) got some strange comments about my driving on the way home, once we were on the motorway i forgot about the clutch cable being snapped and someone tried racing me... so i ......... tried to drop it into 3rd CRUNCH!!! then had to slow down to ~ 40mph to get the car back into 4th (4speed yo) ... Was an experience i tell you.....
FredTransit Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 Gary had an alternator bracket snap in the middle of France. He tightened the fan belt (no brakes on the DI without an alternator) by hammering a can of corned beef between the alternator and the block! It got him to Lyon and back home! We still have the can in the black museum.
BaileyMex Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 back in 2005 we had a stand at the Cranleigh Show in Surrey, Popped the bonnet for some reason i cant remember now and one of my alternator bolts was missing Ended up swiping a Wing nut of an old clothes mangle someone had bought
