JAY PS Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Ive just had a article land on my desk say that Gordon is to consider to put into the budget next month a plan to give every owner of a 8yr old car that is above 150g in emissons £2,000 towards a new car so he can kick start the motor trade The article goes on to say that 250,000 cars and 30,000 vans will be affected Bascially another way of getting older cars off our roads . Cant see it happening thou can you
Admin Vista Posted March 18, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 18, 2009 I can see it happening as if it does indeed kick start interest in the car market it'll be a lot cheaper for the government than bailing out car makers. However it'll likely only be against the price of a new or nearly new car.
Messenjah Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 yeah i doubt hed give me 2000 for my 1983 bmw against a 1972 mk2 escort
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 V*uxhall have been doing this for years, and some pretty rare and roadworthy tin has been scrapped (once in the scheme they have to be scrapped). That haveing said, the part ex scheme is only against cars under a year old, so it says to me the buyers will either have to already have the remainder of the cost of the car in the bank (in which case why would they be driving some 8 year old shitter?) or get into debt. Er, wasn't it getting into debt that got the country into this mess in the first place? It will only attract those who want/can afford a brand new car, which is luckily a small percentage of the population. The only real threat to classic cars if the government just simply offered owners £2.5k to drive thier cars to the scrap yard, and that ain't gonna happen! Some good cars will be lost to this though, like natural selection the very old and the very young will believe the hype. Scenario 1: Little Jonny's gran has a mint 20 year old car sat in the garage, she's giving up driving and little Jonny has just got his license. She gives her car to him, but he want some plastic clio or corsa, so between him and his Dad (who will sign the HP) he cashes in the perfectly good classic car and get something that will last about a year. Scenario 2: Mr Smith has just retired. As he no longer has a family to tote about, and doesn't want to be getting his hands dirty with servicing any more, he cashes in the car he's had for 19 years from new and gets some plastic shopping car. Scenario 3: Young Mr and Ms Jones' family is growing. They are keen on the environment and keeping the world entact for the kids. So they scrap their 16 year old perfectly reliable and legal car for some Chelsea tractor, cos it's better for the environment isn't it?
john_3.0s Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 not exactly good for the environment to make lots of new cars is it? still wouldnt expect any kind of joined up rational policy from this govt
Stu_B Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 not exactly good for the environment to make lots of new cars is it? still wouldnt expect any kind of joined up rational policy from this govt Nope, but it's good for their pockets... worry about the environment later
Mr.Sumo Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 Why the fook should i get rid of my perfectly reliable 34 year old car to please that Scottish one-eyed twat Another load of ill -thought out crap from the biggest load of thieving tax hiking t*ss*rs known to man . OOh , let me think , i know , i"ll get myself in even more debt in this recession just to please some tree-hugging Gaurdian reader who thinks that my car is too old and smells....oh my God , i"ve killed a tree . Whatever . W*****rs !!

Whatever . W*****rs !! It's not going to be compulsory Sumo and is aimed at people driving around with largely unmaintained rusty old smokers from the late 80's and early / mid 90's rather than bonafide classics such as those owned by people on here. Plus, is keeping the car industry alive by cheaper means than the tax payer bailing it out entirely such a bad idea? Think of all the people it employs either directly or indirectly.
bortaf Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 How many times is this storey gonna pop up in differant guises it's not compulsory so what the hell does it matter ? If somone is gonna buy a new car then good luck to em, this will save em 2 grand People go off about it like it's the end of the world, if somone wanted to get rid of a grands worth of car for 2 grand i know dam well i would IF and it's a big if a few classics get lost along the way so? makes mine worth more, anything real classic would be worth more than 2G so aint gonna be included id it
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 The problem is, it's the perception that joe public has of their cars, how many times have you been told to come and take something to the scrap yard, only to find a 1 owner from new 30,000 mile job that belongs with somebody who will appreciate it?
Stu_B Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 how many times have you been told to come and take something to the scrap yard, only to find a 1 owner from new 30,000 mile job that belongs with somebody who will appreciate it? My daily is a 1 owner T plate ('99) hyundai with 65k on the clock, she bought a Mini & left it on the drive for 6mnths & wanted rid... free car, I'm not complaining!

My daily is a 1 owner T plate ('99) hyundai with 65k on the clock, she bought a Mini & left it on the drive for 6mnths & wanted rid... free car, I'm not complaining! that would be prime for the scrappage scheme. Good job it's not in on all of the makes, or you wouldn't have a free car to talk about!
Stu_B Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 I see what you're saying, but in this case she went out & bought a 2nd hand Mini so I don't think it would have bee eligible for any incentive scheme. I should imagine very few people who buy brand spankers are currently driving around in sub 2k cars...
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 That's what's making me begin to believe it's not that much of a worry after all. At the end of the day, as Stu_B rightly says, how many people who are looking to buy a brand new car will have a 9 + year old car to cash in for the discount? i am beginning to think this is just an exercise in spin to appease the the environmentalists in Brussels, a bit like the LEZ but affecting less people.....
tazrocks88 Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 so what you are saying is if you know any1 who wants a new car tell them 2 go buy a shit heap for £200 and they will get £1800 off a new car
FredTransit Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 so what you are saying is if you know any1 who wants a new car tell them 2 go buy a shit heap for £200 and they will get £1800 off a new car As far as I know they have to have owned the car for a year or more, to stop people doing just that!
YOUNGY Posted March 18, 2009 Report Posted March 18, 2009 at the moment people can't get finance to buy a new car anyway. And cars are depreciating so fast alot of people think its pointless buying a new car anyway.
FredTransit Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 Well i went off having new at some point in 1988.....
Mr.Sumo Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 The whole point of this scheme is a con . Heres how it works , right : you have a £1000 car...the dealer / govt ( whoever ) offers you £2000 as an incentive to buy a shiney new plastic car . Right , you haven"t got the remaining £10,000+ to pay for it have you ? No , because if you did , you wouldnt need to trade in , you would be paying cash ! So , heres the con . You have to get the rest of your shiney new plastic car on finance . The garage etc , sets the interest rate @ say 3.9% over 5 years .....your £2000 incentive has just dissappeared up in smoke because it has just payed the interest to the finance company for the next 5 years . You are now in debt to the tune of £10,000 and the Govt will earn more money off you ( in Tax ans N.I ) because you have to earn more money to cover the repayments ........ Oh , and your nice reliable 10/20 year old car ? Thats gone down the auction to be sold and the cash from that goes in the garages pocket for the Christmas bash  There is one good thing ..... the garage sold a new car and the scrap man got a rebate off the govt for " recycling " your old car
FredTransit Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 The more I think about it, the more I think we don't need to worry too much, cos those who might have a car that would be cashed in can't afford to pay the rest.
BigWallace Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 Just another scam to add to the long line of previous govt scams (remember the rolling 25 year tax exemption on classic cars that Tony Blair so kindly put an end to? As anyone with say, a mk2 Escort or similar, will be feeling a tad ripped off). Whatever happens, I'm Scottish and still think Gordon Brown is a one eye'd w@*ker who's just another Yank's little lapdog! The Government does'nt care how much they screw us (and there are so many ways with which they do) just as long as they can line their own pockets and give all those bankers who screwed up so badly a HUGE golden handshake for pushing loans on Joe Public who they knew would'nt be able to repay the money. Another thing that put the country into debt was that White Elephant called the Scottish Parliment. One of my mates was on that job. How much did the top of the welcome desk (part of a treetrunk from an extremely rare tree, imported specially) cost? It cost (don't choke on your lunch!) a staggering £80,000. No wonder things have gone to rat sh*t! Rant over!
FredTransit Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Hang on, here's a point, do they pay us if the car is costing less than £2500?? http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/23032009/36/th ... car-0.html
Fishtailparka Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I was talking to a friend who deals in 2nd hand cars. He told me Renault had already started doing it. The main dealer had a y reg Golf in part ex and it could only go for scrap because of the scheme. He reckoned it was a perfectly good car and could easily be sold for £3.5k. Absolutely mental! How the Hell is that environmentally friendly? I've been driving for nearly 30 years and have never owned a car less than 10 years old.
Mr Sam Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 ao im due to scrap a 1996 escort and likely to get £50+ for it, if i inform G.B. he will give me a further £2000???? or does thus 2k HAVE to go towards a NEW car, fookin ridiclious IMO just stop importing forgien cars and make brittish people buy brittish cars built in brittian by brittish people.
Admin Vista Posted March 23, 2009 Admin Report Posted March 23, 2009 IMO just stop importing forgien cars and make brittish people buy brittish cars built in brittian by brittish people. Most foreign cars are built in Britain by british people.......................or are you proposing using the Ariel Atom / Caterham as family cars and evicting all the foreign owned plants in Britain?
