Hi chaps, i want to get a new/old car for everyday use, fancy a mk2 or a mk4 cortina, my brother in law says something that old can't be used as a daily driver, i do 200+ miles a week, as some of you use your cars everyday, will something like this be ok to use & will a pinto lump be up to this sort of mileage? I'd like your views on this subject, don't want to get something new & boring, cheers

I use my Mk1 Escort as my daily driver... 2.1 Pinto accompanied with twin 45's!

It can be a bit heavy on petrol and all that but driving's supposed to be fun & you'll pay the price to get that right!! :D:dance:

As BigKev says, there were plenty of Fords in the 70's and 80's with them fitted and they're still going. It's just the cars have mainly fallen apart around the engine.

And Kev (KJ1320) says they're a Transit engine, so that means they're capable of millions of miles

My Mk2 Tina has been my sensible daily driver for about 8 years now.

You do have to look after them and keep on top of any problems, but I've never had a modern car and don't ever intend to.

I've done well over 100,000 miles in it and have never been towed home. Had some very close calls and some roadside repairs but always got home!!

use mine very regular (although not for a comute) buts ost eenings and every weekend.

hasn't even spat, coughed or choked once. a said if you keep on top of oil changes etc. they're little gems :)

Well, a guy down the road from me uses his MK1 cortina everyday all year round, when he's not riding his BSAs to work, and he's owned it from new, it was his first car and its immaculate and is top condition, and deffinately practical, just make sure you keep up under the arches clean to keep the rust away, as any car will do.

Yeah mate a pinto will go on forever if its not abused and has regular services, the sign of a badly serviced pinto is a really annooying tap tap tap from the top which is due to a badly designed spray bar, but if its been looked after then it'll be spot on and sit on the motor way all day long! Have you thought about a 1.6 or 2.0 Capri? I used mine every day for 3 years until i broke it (my fault!) and i delivered pizzas in it every night on top of that and then went for a long drive at night most days, put 40 odd thousand miles on it in those three years and the pinto never missed a beat. More reliable than a lot of modern shite, just make sure you change the oil regularly and it'll be spot on!

Same here mate. I used my old 1.6LS/2.0S every day for 3 years to and from work. Of an evening, I too was out delivering Pizza's in it!

Daveyboy is correct, you have to give them regular oil changes because the spray bar for the camshaft blocked easily. But, I think from 1987, Ford revised this bar, and made the holes slightly larger. This greatly reduced the chances of knackering your cam shaft!

That is what Jimbob is thinking to himself!

Greenwich council are so pathetic & stupid they cain the roads round here in the mountains with salt just because it may be a bit "chilly" I used to use my cars in all weathers, but, I have just sorted my scooter out because quite frankly, I am fed up with them trying to destroy my car. Plus I couldn't care less about the bike!!!

Some people think I am mad, but I have always been one of those "die hard" riders, rain wind or shine. It really doesn't bother me!!!

I've done roughly 30k a year for ages now in old cars with no real hassles :D

Only earlier this year I bought a shitebox diesel Pug for long distance stuff as once on a 1200 mile Glasgow London 3 day trip I spent £340 on fuel!!!

I think that if you want a reliable daily your best bet is to stick to a car in original set up. When you start swapping engines it is likely that you won't get it as spot on as Ford originally did. Go for a original car and get he engine reconditioned.

Apart from trying to sort out some running problems (its now having the engine rebuilt as it hasn't been touched since 1991) Ive been using the Anglia daily up until the last three months, and all the problems Ive encountered are because the guy who had it before didnt do anything to it, once I got the dynamo charging right and now the bearings and gaskets changed it was running reallly sweet, I just wanted it to be 'done' so I know everything's spot on, and it has the original engine in it.

As I see it, it's been used for 43 years, 36 of those by the original owner and only the second owner has let it fall into its current state, so once Ive got it running right and sort out the front wings and other minor faults it'll go on for another 43, just cos it's a classic doesn't make it suddenly something that only comes out when the sun's shining, its there to be enjoyed and thats what I'll do with it.
