herb capri Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 ok govt wants old motors off the road, its no secret, the mots will get tighter ,the tax exemption will probably get recinded, not extended! so,will they hit the modifieds? make mots harder? reduce the milage you can do? restrict roads and areas you can use your pride and joy on? these are all measures that have been discussed or implemented in e u countries lets face it all it will take is a modded saxo with big exhaust with a. doped up driver,to plough into a group of mums and kids killing and maiming ,you can see the press driving the politicians knife into our dream cars! in this land it really could happen. what do you reckon? There are two types of people who drive OSF's a) Enthusiasts; and Dorises who cant afford to replace their "old battered car" with something new. john_3.0s Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 yes they are definatly numbered. old cars, modified cars etc etc are bad news and if this govt has its way we will all be dealt with like rapists or pedos for having an interest that isnt so PC as it was due to mis-guided environmental do-gooders. When you look at it the best thing would be to flog them all while they still have some value (they wont be worth sh!t when petrol is a fiver a gallon, road use is charged by the mile and legislation passed to make it increasingly hard to maintain outside of an expensive govt authorised garage) and stay at home watching x-factor all weekend. Sorry guys but its the way it is.

Admin Vista Posted September 10, 2009 Admin Report Posted September 10, 2009 I think that to encourage the scrapping of old cars with cash incentives is one thing but to actively legislate against classic cars is completely another and any government that tried it would be committing political suicide. Plenty of people can't afford new or nearly new cars and you can't legislate against just some classic cars, it would have to be all or nothing and there are plenty of the well to do that would be unhappy about being denied the use of their classic Bentleys, Mercs etc so it's not just us. As to the modified element, yes there's a good chance that regulation of this will tighten up (I believe it already is) but is that really such a bad thing? There have been some shocking examples of unsafely modified cars over the years. People complained about the introduction of compulsory seat belt laws too but look how many lives that has saved over the years.
evil knievel Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I don't think the rich blokes with 12 Bentleys and 18 Rolls Royce's would particularly like an anti-classic car legislation. I think it is pretty safe to be honest, and as Vista said it would be political suicide to do such a thing. Around here more and more people are buying Classic's, not in particularly good nick in some cases, and I think our numbers are still growing. I don't really think we have much to worry about folks, for a start there is strength in numbers and I think there is plenty of clubs around that would get a petition or something similar organised together.
MM77 Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Just think, you could live in the worst country in the world for modified cars, Australia I know of two people with Subaru WRXs who were caught speeding. Police impounded the car for "dangerous driving" (or hooning as its called here ). Then the cars were deemed unroadworthy so required money to return it all to standard. Only problem with that was a hole had been cut in the inner guards to stick a cold air intake down. Because this was deemed as a structural (ie chassis) modification, the cars were written off never to be registered again. And keeping in mind cars over here are a LOT more expensive than there. A '00 WRX is still roughly around the £9-£10k mark... You guys have it good. Cant wait to come back there, and leave this sh!thole behind.

If they don't get us on emissions they will get us on the damage we can do to another car or pedestrians in a crash. Best we can hope for is organised rally only use but i'm not interested in doing that. Right off in the Cortina to enjoy some borrowed time.

I will only add the following, yes, undoubtedly the days of enjoying the freedoms we currently have are numbered. As for the 'they will never do it attitude' let me just say that I spend most of my day circumnavigating pointless government inspired drivel that is intended to make our lives easier or safer as part of my work. It is happening in other areas and its happening by the back door, if a positive spin can be put on it then it can be sold to the public as good for you! As for regulations regarding modifed cars, I don't think any of us on here want to see badly modded cars mowing down queues of pensioners, but any scheme that is ill concieved and badly implemented by poorly trained jobsworths is not to be applauded. Just because people enforce rules for a living don't assume they actually know what they are doing!

You need to remember that classic cars are also very much the domain of rich people. Lords , members of parliament and even our future king..........are these people going to allow the removal of their " prides and joys" off the roads....I very much doubt it
