sampedlar06 Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Ive been helping my nan clear out her garage as she is moving and found 14lb if the stuff i know its dangerous but dont know what to do with it. i know a few years ago i could have got good money for it, is it still worth alot? so where do i take it to get it safely disposed of or sell....i would like to do it properly so i dont end up selling to someone from the taliband!! thanks Sam
Admin Vista Posted February 5, 2010 Admin Report Posted February 5, 2010 It's poisonous (in both liquid and vapour form) rather than dangerous. As long as it's properly stored it's quite safe. Value? no idea ring around some scrap metal merchants and see what they say. If you don't get any interest you could see if the science departments at any local schools want it.
sampedlar06 Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 cheers mate shes got a load of copper wire and pipe to weigh in. ill take it along as well and see what thay say about it. probally worth nothing but you never know
Grizzley Dell Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 i work at a school, i will see if their interested if you want.
Fishtailparka Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 WTF was your gran doing with 14lbs of mercury?? http://www.zyra.net/getridmercury.htm
FredTransit Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 That was the first thing that came to my mind!
andy a Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I'd be careful trying to sell it, its sale is controlled, price depends on what grade it is...
sampedlar06 Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 my grandad used to be a telecom engineer thingy. think in the old days its was used as some sort of connector or something like that. grizzley dell, if you wouldnt mind that would be great, but im under the impression that mercury is banned in schools. Thanks
petrolhead Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Yes, you'll find limited demand from schools. They only have small amounts in jars that are rarely shown to students. Even mercury thermometers are banned. 14lbs is a helluva lot, it should be worth a fair bit to the right person. And yes, be careful who you sell it to, it could be used to make 1000's of tilt switches or devastate entire food chains.

bortaf Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Makes great tilt switches for b o m b s apparently, know anyone call Allen kieeda It's not that expensive if i recall as said depending on grade, fiver a kilo ish Not sure if it still works but this was the mercury amnesty hotline number 01706 924126 between 8.30am and 4.45pm.
FredTransit Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Why? Why would anybody want any of that stuff about the house? What domestic use does it have?
you'll get 10s on that Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 mercury used to be used in the hat trade. It was rubbed into the brim of a felt hat to make it stiffer. The health hazard led to the well known phrase "mad as a hatter" too much absorbed through the skin can lead to brain damage!!!!!!!!
FredTransit Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Oh yeah I remember that now, but that's not a domestic use is it? Unless people used to re dress their hats at home from time to time.
accord83 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 But wouldn't a mercury soaked hat get bigger on a hot day, and pinch your head on a cold one
FredTransit Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Classic! I had a image of that happening....

FredTransit Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Didn't fillings used to have mercury in them?
V8ian Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Theres more Mercury in a slice of cod than in a filling,!! Yes Mercury was used for making hats, hence the Term "Mad as a Hatter" its an accumulative poison, and affects the brain, Mercury also used to be used in large amounts in making sheet glass, the molton sheet glass was moved on a bed of mercury while it cooled, its now done on molton Tin, Ohh and balls of mercury is such fun to play with, What chance do I stand, Playing with mercury as a kid and working in a Lead Foundry for years!!
