Col-ashtonmobile Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 During conversations with people this year some said they thought the crossflow was so slowly fading away , being replaced by more modern engines mainly zetec,s , st170,s ,duratec,s and of course pinto,s , companies like caterham cars finished with the crossflow a long time ago and the numbers are dropping . Well i,m going to kick their thoughts into touch Story is , classic ford done a feature on modifying the xflow front timing cover to enable the cam timing to be adjusted in the summer issue, Having a chat with Simon Wooley cf editor joe & i said we,ve done that mod quite a few times in years gone by and a good modification it is when running hot cams, Simon kindly suggested he would offer our services of modifying covers in the mag in case people were,nt confident of doing it themselves , Well the phone has not stopped ringing we are on number 14 now in just 8 weeks , and a guy down in taunton somerset is sending us up 4 next week to be modified , So what with Nick Williams superb WPE built 2 litre xflow recently on the road , Joe Little hitting the 12 seconds in his xflow a couple of weeks ago ,Fiesta Steve has a big power fwd xflow he has built for next year and of course not forgetting Toby,s legendary pre xflow i would say the kent engine is going to be about for a good few years yet .... what,s everyone,s thoughts ????
SebringRS Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 Certianly will still be around im sure What with people, as you say Colin, getting big power out of something small and easy to work on and still fairly cheap. I'd say people are being catious about old engines due to them being seen as unreliable, but to be fair when a x-flow or pinto goes wrong, 9/10 times its an easy fix. Where-as with something more modern it could be a whole different ball game. I've got a pinto in the RS and a crossflow in the 1100, both are staying that way, couldnt be more happy with the reliablity out of the two (albeit with a bit more power maybe in a few years )
Fiesta Steve Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 I don't see any Fiesta covers there Col, lol. I think perhaps now people have a choice they are tempted by the apparently high bhp figures of a standard engine. I don't think we can say goodbye to the old crosser just yet
4DOOR-SHERWOOD Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 I don't think its had its day.....just easy now to buy a modern twin cam and complete fitting kit to bolt into our old fords, its easy reliable power that doesn't break the bank! My yellow 4door has a great hot x/flow in it and sounds awesome....I wouldn't change that engine for anything else....sometimes old skool needs to stay old skool!!! I am putting an XE in the cossack car tho!
w p e Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 the x/flow will always be around as it says what goes around and all that. seventees style next its coming and so will the x/flow again. i got one of them covers i made 20 yrs ago sitting on the shelf
RossMK2 Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 as much as i have had thoughts of a more modern engine but i still love the look of an old engine in a old engine bay
over_head_cam Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 Two words: Pushrod Power Oh and Glen: lol PS. I know pushrod technically isn't one word but it sounds better
MK2Ed Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 Well done Col, keep it real keep it old skool I say...

banarama Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 crossflows will allways be around/ same as pintos.proper engines
Nick Mexi-cos Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Go On the Xflow , the something to be said for the old girl one of the oldest engines out there that was in production from the 1959 right through to the 2002 if i recall and now the blocks are being remade again , nothing like looking in an engine bay and seeing something that was in there from the start or near on in my case lol , Mine made 175bhp at 7100rpm and thats with no adjustment to timing and just a change of jets in the carbs so pretty sure there be a bit more to come from the old girl with some more tweeks , a good old rubber 1700 xflow is still good for power and cheaper than converting a Zetec when you take into account cost for converting of properly " or nicely should i say " to rear wheel drive PUSHROD THE END NO CHANCE THE BEST JUST GETS BETTER
mk1super Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 They prove time and again they can deliver the goods, a very rubust engine, were it not that they were quite so expensive to get power out of mine would stay put.

There not exspensive to get good power from , set of forged pistons and a nice head and cam and some 45s will see 140-160 bhp depending on head and cam , ive just gone over board , steel components dont give more power there just stronger. bigger capacity will give you a little more power , cheaper than a standard 2.0 zetec on 45s as i said above with conversion cost with similar if not more power , unless you go for the st170 engine if iam correct

lead foot Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 i would not change my x flow for the world , hoping to have a power run at some stage to find out what is putting out, just put a set of 45s on so i hope this will help a bit more !!

As you say too, cheaper than a zetec conversion and with with a bit of money and some thought a 150bhp engine is well achievable. joe
