colr6 Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 Anybody used BGH gear kits, looking to bin the Quaife straight cut because of the noise, just looking around at helical kits and theirs seems very well priced. Any info would be appreciated.
dalmarshall Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 Loudboy's got one...I've only heard good stuff about them. Much quieter as you say and they can still handle as much....If not more power as an s/c
Admin Vista Posted August 10, 2015 Admin Report Posted August 10, 2015 It's a myth perpetuated by the ill informed that a straight cut box is stronger than one with helical gears. They are certainly more efficient as they don't have to deal with end thrust in the gear sets but for similar sized gears, helical gearing is stronger as the tooth contact patch is larger
PeteRS8084 Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 Blimey it's like university challenge on here.........can I have a new starter for 10 please vista 1
colr6 Posted August 10, 2015 Author Report Posted August 10, 2015 It's more the noise issue I have, Not broke a straight cut box yet. Would like to try these so called comp helical boxes 1- noise 2-see if they are as good ie not break them. Going to build a box and see what happens, it can at worse come out the bottom.
colr6 Posted August 10, 2015 Author Report Posted August 10, 2015 And who might YOU be representing Pete?

khanlad Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 You could fit a wireless, wouldnt notice the noise as much?
colr6 Posted August 10, 2015 Author Report Posted August 10, 2015 Would have to be some serious sound system to cover the noise of this box! Used to use tran-x never this noisy. You look a bit of a twat going to the shops with ear defenders on! (Save them for the wife when she gets a bill for car parts)

Pete if you thought Vista,s reply warranted university challenge this guy was in the black chair on mastermind. What with rolling circumferences final drive ratios theoretical speeds at certain revs, needed a calculator to keep up with him! The top and bottom of it was he said I could not break one of his boxes!!! .........so ordered one. The proof is in the pudding. We will find out.
khanlad Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Must admit ive never heard or read a bad word about them
colr6 Posted August 11, 2015 Author Report Posted August 11, 2015 Told him was on the OSF forum offered to do machining on synchro's FOC plus any checking of parts that I was unsure about send them to him for his advice. Can't get fairer than that.
PeteRS8084 Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Well fingers crossed it what your after.........and imagine the fun you will have trying to break it...........It will be like your driving a rally car, you know a great rally car......like an ESCORT! Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted August 12, 2015 Moderator Report Posted August 12, 2015 Even though Im very far away I can actually contribute to this tread as I actually have a gearset from BGH. Its not a competition one just one of their raised first gear sets. I have to say this is the single most important modification I every made. It totally transforms starts with a 2lt Pinto engined Escort. Friends thought I modified the engine such is the performance difference off the line. The standard first gear left Pinto engines buzzing till you could get it into second. One of the problems I encountered was that it took me 18 months to get it. The time span stems from I wanted a raised first gear set for a Type E 4 speed box and they hadnt made one for a 4 speed in a number of years and I waited till they could get a few more orders so as to do a batch at once. Apparently someone visited their workshop and saw the start of my order sitting to one side and he said I wouldnt mind one of those and also told his friends and voila it eventually arrived. I cant say I have tried to test its strength to the full but its a well worthwhile modification even on a standard RS2000. Best money I ever spend on my Mk2.
colr6 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Report Posted August 13, 2015 Put a post in parts wanted in relation to this thread. What came from BGH
