When I was a kid, long, long ago, we had a big Jap single on a rotary lawn mower, it would cut any length of lawn, chop bricks, sliced the dogs chain into 9" lengths and fired them through the fence. It made sense to check the long grass before cutting. It was an animal of a lawn mower.

john a preswitch or summat like that, used to be in everything from scrotivators, mowers, mixers. but the best ones were in speedway bikes! the one youve got probably one of the scrotivator. seen one used in a bike though using a bsa or triumph pre unit box.

i think bike as its not a bottom mount like a stationery engine, speedway bikes used 500cc jap engines but ohv in the 50s

Agree with all the above really, could be used in alsorts of applications. Bit like villiers engines used from bikes to the famous three wheeled bond ! Would just list as a JAP stationary engine/ bike engine.

Any numbers on it ? A couple more photos may help. If I can't identify it I might know a man who can. Thinking along 350 cc early 50s if it is 350 then more likely a bike but it's missing quite a few parts...casing/ magneto

looks like a stationary engine. Bit of image googly done. came up with this;

500cc j.a.p build 1929. You have something very old for sure.

Was talking to my friend today over this and he has quite a bit of literature on JAP somewhere and came to light that only last week a dealer he knows bought a dissected JAP engine which was used for illustration purposes of how it works. That guy is also a source of info. A pic of the other side of engine might help which would normally have the case on it to drive the magneto, also on that side will be the pushrod tubes which may also be a source of year and capacity. This is the problem with only part of a engine the more you can see of what's left will help in determine what it was used in or for. Will pass on the info to see what we can find out. Cheers Col

any idea what this is from?attachicon.gif002.JPGattachicon.gif001.JPG

From what I can find out so far believe 1929 600cc could have been used in quite a few things but strong reference made towards Sunbeam m/ cycle but still digging.

So i have also a very old 1 cil engine that mine father found years a years ago in a ditch in the country side and that seems that the parts did come from Italy and build in Holland.

Here's a couple I prepared earlier"...lol

so that might be like the one in the picture i've shown. That is a 1929 build. but 500cc.

From what I've found so far from engine number is U equates to 1929 and c equates to 600cc the 2 which I thought was model number but that relate to approx 150 cc stationary, which it's not. The plot thickens. JAP supplied around 30 different manufacturers so numbers have to be studied as a lot don't relate to JAP but a mix of them and whoever got the engine.

goes beyond me colr6, just was trying to hepl a little. Figures were from the site i found, so i don't know about capacity, in fact anything  :mrgreen:  other then JAP motors to be used in early dirttrack bikes

Oke Colr6 , i am very happy with your pic`s and info , but how can i save your foto`s ?

I'm problably the worst person to ask, but here goes. If on computer try right click on image hopefully will come up with an option of 'save image' then send to a file or desktop. I used an iPad so to save an image place finger on image for a couple of seconds then let go, icons come up with 'save image' click on that and it automatically goes into my photo file. Hope this helps but if it goes wrong don't blame me ...lol
