RWL81P Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 they were definitly fitted in some saabs though.
eeb43 Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 and that was the downfall of saab!!!!! gm wanted saab to produce a saab quality vehicle and sell it at slightly more than a vauxhall price and that would mean making a loss so saab continued to make a quality car and gm pulled the plug as it was losing money
eeb43 Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 like i said i dont like em, but very tuneable with only top end work, much like a pinto. another shite ford engine for making power was the cvh. reliable but crap for power. the cvh was a turd from day one no power and smoked like a train the 1100 was so bad ford discontinued it after about 3 months and went back to the 1100 crossflow
colr6 Posted July 3, 2017 Author Report Posted July 3, 2017 So going by the diversion off the original question, pound for pound to achieve the 230/40 bhp the red top is the winner then ?
eeb43 Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 if they were readily available possibly! much prefer the saab engine though even a sidevalve over any vauxhall! 1

colr6 Posted July 3, 2017 Author Report Posted July 3, 2017 You would have thought by the volume of zetecs been used for the tuning side because if their availability the parts would be cheaper by now with more suppliers getting on the band wagon as you might say. Even with the Duratecs from what I understand are more forgiving on the power front they are as equally expensive to get good power outputs.
aardvark101 Posted July 3, 2017 Report Posted July 3, 2017 You are gonna need a lot of dollar to get 200bhp+ na from a zetec, and then it will be nervous as fook. Oh btw ST-170 ENGINES ONLY PUT OUT 150 ISH BRAKE AS STANDARD not 170

Oh btw ST-170 ENGINES ONLY PUT OUT 150 ISH BRAKE AS STANDARD not 170 This was my whole point of going Red top, yes not a Ford engine but when it's power your after on a budget the obvious choice. Apart from that we had 6/7 kicking about plus all the parts and knowledge from national hot rod racing. Know a few people who have chosen supposed specialist in the red top tuning world with claims of 290/300bhp out of there engines or 'kits' most of them utter the round ones and Rip your kidneys and heart out to find out there 25/30bhp down on there claims. I have a few parts from one particular company supposed leader in red top tuning....rubbish yes they did produce a few engines that give fantastic figures on a test bench in controlled environment to get their name as the market 'leaders' so it's a must for everyone to buy at over inflated prices. Makes we laugh when you read there claims and all the supposed development work that goes into their products to be the dogs the round ones then you get it and it's crap. We all live and learn.

katana Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 Not knowing much about Vauxhall engines - what cars were they from? Just thinking that Vauxhall were big into the Touring Car Series so producing a strong engine for that would have its advantages?
Admin Vista Posted July 4, 2017 Admin Report Posted July 4, 2017 Not knowing much about Vauxhall engines - what cars were they from? Just thinking that Vauxhall were big into the Touring Car Series so producing a strong engine for that would have its advantages? They were fitted to most through the late 80's and early 90's. Think mk2 Astra GTE 16valve (their first use to my knowledge) Cavalier mk3, Calibra etc

Admin Vista Posted July 4, 2017 Admin Report Posted July 4, 2017 secret vauxhall fan! I owned a mk1 Astra in about 88, a 1.6SR and I loved it. Bought a Calibra in about 95 and hated it, it lasted less than 4 weeks.
deltamal Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 The nasp 2.4 Cossie YB produced 265 brake, but it did cost £6500, with the NOS guess it was well over 300 brake, power costs money! cheaper fix is with a big turbo, but I didn't want that.
preacherman Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 which is easier and less expensive to install - Pinto - Zetec - GM red top Which one respond best to tuning Which one has the most BHP / Torque in standard set up. I just replaced my Pinto with another , ok ots just over 100 bhp i would have liked a zetec but my lack of mechanical ability and know how put me off other converstions and pockets arent that deep. 1

You ain't even near the marks! Try looking at small block Chevy's, or Dodge's and / or Ford V8's ! 4 bangers ie, Pinto + X-flow + CHV + Zetec + Duratec, added together and you may come close!
RWL81P Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 true, wanst counting the v8s! were talking 4 pots.

Would say for ease of most things and tuning parts are widely availiable with a very good reliability factor it's got to be the pinto. With the red top your into sumps bellhousings ecu to do it right and getting a bit thin on the ground now. Not done a zetec but would appear more parts required to convert to rwd and the parts ain't cheap.

khanlad Posted July 4, 2017 Report Posted July 4, 2017 Doesnt the alt run the wrong way? Do you use original flywheel?
eeb43 Posted July 5, 2017 Report Posted July 5, 2017 Doesnt the alt run the wrong way? Do you use original flywheel? depends what car its out of
