Offensive axle tramp..

As the title suggests, I have appalling axle tramp on my MK1 Cortina when hanging the back end out and anything over a quick launch from standstill..

275-300BHP, "A" frame, coilovers, Spax adjustable gas rear shocks, 2.8 spring fronts as locators.. Any help on where to start looking would be appreciated 😊

Tramp is usually caused by spring windup buy you say you have coilovers

I can grab a photo tomorrow, the only part of the springs left is the front half, the rear half has been removed and it now just acts as a locator. No side to side movement on the axle with or without weight on though.

Also has a MK1 Escort rear anti roll bar fitted. But I'm not convinced it has an effect either positively or negatively 😅

The anti roll bar will not affect that

however the location of the upper mounts will you say you have A frame location this may not be enough so axle is twisting on springs 

Slipper spring setup may cure it or proper 4 link tbh 

maybe anti tramp bars located next to front spring mount

This is an old photo, that shite rod at the top hasn't been there for about 2 years. But the setup is 95% the same.

You haven’t got any location above the axle! That is the reason 

you could possibly move the a frame above the axle and see how it performs but think your exhaust will be in the way So you may be better off getting an anti tramp bar kit

I would be checking the angle of the nose of the diff ,looks like it’s pointing up ,might be the pic thaough

Agreed with that - with grippy tyres the axle is trying to rotate forward - anti tramp bars should prevent that, but need to be above the axle just like RS models.

As Katana says, moving the axle bracket for the springs would improve things. But, I think that you'll be getting some wind up in the leaf springs, allowing the axle to rotate, so swap the springs for bars to further improve the situation.

Any idea how much of a pain fitting an Escort 4 bar or tramp bars to a Cortina is?

You mean anti tramp bars? They did didn't they? The GT Mk1 Cortina had antitramp bars as standard.

I thought the GT had anti tramp bars but I can't find photos to find factory locations (Not that I'm too bothered about factory)

Factory locations are pretty much same as the escort straight tramp bar setup

Making the boxes for the 4 link is your only obstacle as floor is different shape to the escort but you could use the kit and modify boxes as rest of kit will work 

I found cortina anti tramp brackets on a site but where about £400 just for those

This is a GT mk1 Cortina. There's no tramp bars currently fitted but you can see the bracket for one to the right of the pic.

So for custom anti tramp bars it looks like I could come off the outside of the axle, just before the U-bolts as a place to fit the brackets.. Although my A frame brackets are in the way of fitting rail brackets so perhaps up through the floor would be better?

why not replace the cut down leaf springs with a custom version of a ladder bar ? the lower bar to attach under the axle can be straight, and the top bar can attach to the top of the axle and angle down to meet the lower bar near the front pivot / mounting. the whole axle will arc about the front mounting so pinion angle will be a compromise. use a 4 bar style axle bracket for the axle fixing with rose joints / poly bush ends threaded into the rods for adjustment. alternatively, can you just fit full leaf springs back on ? with your coilovers, even stock springs will be enough to stop the axle rotating backwards as the torque is applied.

Just come across this, catching up with a few things. Looking at your original set up I’m not surprised it suffers with axle tramp. All the pivot points are at the bottom so all your lower bars are doing is stopping the axle moving sideways. Fitting escort 4 link kit shouldn’t pose any problems, the kit don’t know what it’s been fitted to but the theory behind it works no matter what. Fitting a 4 link will require either the removal of the springs altogether or change to slippers on the front mount and will require the fitment of a panhard rod or watts linkage to stop axle side movement. With the use of coil overs just 5 or 6 link it job done. You may lose the rear seat fitting the 4 link kit though.

Ordered an Escort 4 link and panhard road so I'll be modifying that end of next month. Car has no rear seats anymore so losing them isn't an issue, I just want to be able to do burnouts and not kangaroo for the next 3 days 😅
