From my experience, if you tried the engine would last about 2 seconds... However if you put diesel in a petrol car it will run - poorly but it will go

Never done it in over 20 years of driving, and i drive all sorts of different vehicles all the time, dunno how its possible to not notice what your driving seeing as you stare right at it when you stick the nozzle in but loads of people seem to manage it.

petrol in a diesal not good one guy filled up with 200ltrs but realised b4 he started up so apartfrom an expensive fill up it was fine. the second was not so cheap! guy filled the lorry up with petrol drove half a mile up the road to the yard and parked up. diffrent driver the next morning started it up got a mile up the road and bang goes the engine havent done it myself yet

I realised as I was chatting to my mate through the window telling him how cheap the diesel was.. Then I realised it was unleaded! - Cost me £300 to have it drained & cleaned - £60 of wasted unleaded & £60 refill - Bad day!

you'd be suprised the amount of times people do that! I used to work in a petrol station and people were always try to fill their rent a van transits with petrol. Managed to save a few by not releasing the pump but half the time they dont realise before they go to drive off and chew the diesel pump up on the way out. Ive never driven anything thats not petrol so Ive never had that problem, although in my new job Im going to be driving vans so im wondering how long it will be until i try it myself.

a mate of mine works for a Ford main dealer, they see at least 4 a week through for this sort of caper

There was going to be a system to help prevent that. The filler caps were going to be magnetised, and you stick them to the pump next to the nozzle. If you put a petrol cap by the diesel nozzle it wouldn't stick (wrong magnet pole see?) and you would know you had the wrong pump...

never done it myself, but what i dont understand is why cant they have a different shaped nozzle for petrol / diesel

 

u could make a collar type thingy to fit current cars?

Me mums put £20 worth of petrol in her diesel van i just topped it up with £30 or diesel, bit bangy but cleared the injectors out a treat

never went so good as after that little cockup

either will run it all depends on the mix ratio

not done it myself but my brother works for a recovery garage and the get 2 or 3 most weeks especially in the summer holidays

when i did my work experience in the garage....had a bloke who picked up his brand new 06plate merc slk with 75quids worth of diesel!

have been told of a bloke in Norwich that filled his Mk4 Cortina with £20 of diesel so just drove round the ring road until he needed to fill it up again then just filled it to the brim with petrol. Bet it made a lovely white fog following him around.
