Guest MK1gaz Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Whos done a diy cheapo paint job then without proper spray equipment ? So i'm talking about with cans or brushes then . How many aerosoles does it take too spray a mk1 cortina or is it cheaper to use a tin of paint / red oxide etc etc and a roller ?
geoffersmasher Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 my brother sprayed his mk1 escort in grey primer only using poundland cans
Savvi Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 My mates Dad used to paint his cars with normal house paint mixed with thinners. He was a painter and decorator, so he also used to mix up what ever colours he had left over from jobs !!! He would use a roller then a paint brush apart from the weird colours he'd come up with they looked good.
bomber1 Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 if ur doing it a dark colour ie satin black i think it takes about 8 cans of top coat. halfords 500ml cans. if ur going a lighter colour ie yellow u could double that imo
FredTransit Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 my brother sprayed his mk1 escort in grey primer only using poundland cans Dammit poundland do primer?? I am off to the shops!
borneo Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html Check this out!
Rick Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 you can flat anything down afterwards to make it perfect, iv seen people do great brush jobs personally i wouldnt though
jack4door Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I've sprayed my mk2 scort with halfords primer, no idea how many cans i've been through though, maybe 10-15?
TwoLitrePinto Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 i sprayed my bonet with a cheapo can of satin black from car crazy, used about a can and a bit (big cans) on top of primer. the nozzles on the top of the halfords bottles are crap, i had a nozzle off a different spray can i found that sprayed in a line rather than a circle patch. does a much nicer job if you can do that
Toby Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I had a mad old (in age) work mate, really used to make me laugh, he painted his red audi 80 outside with spray cans, it showed, and I think there was more paint on his neighbours car than his. Neighbour from hell!! And a mad as a March hare!
Cookie Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I think by the time you have bought a few dozen cans to do it the 'cheaper' way its mnore economical to pay 50 notes for a cheapie compressor and get some proper paint At least then you can flatten it back properly, always find aerosol can paint weak as piss and horrible to flatten
Rick Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 good point cookie. canned stuff is very weak if your not laquering over it, it will polish off in fact
5hane Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 if you can borrow compressor thats the best. we painted a 4 door mk2 escort in b&q paint. and used b&q thinners. cam out ok before. 80 grit paper (thats all we had) filler/ resin paint we used blue coat on white coat on fini and too the show! cost around £26
TwoLitrePinto Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 good point cookie. canned stuff is very weak if your not laquering over it, it will polish off in fact yes, i painted mine outside, tried to do it in thin layers, done it in like 3 coats, and the last coat still wasnt atall flat, i used some halfords rubbing compound, to flatten it which did work and then polished it up with tcut, looks good apart from it went very thin in a couple of spots where you can see primer through it!!! aside from that, about 3 days later a seagull sh*t on it and the marks still there
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 cool , loving the £26 spray job . So hoping to spray mine for less than £50 then , sounds tight but i'm spending money on going fast and not bling

5hane Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 i wouldnt really say it was up to it lol it has lumps all over it from the 'filler' (mostly resin shaped with and angle grinder very strong ) but it runs ,

So hoping to spray mine for less than £50 then , sounds tight but i'm spending money on going fast and not bling , if you hire the tools it shouldnt cost much. o forgot the paint was non drip made all the diffrence ~ ish
harris horse power Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 cool , loving the £26 spray job . So hoping to spray mine for less than £50 then , sounds tight but i'm spending money on going fast and not bling stop being stingy and get it down to plough lane
FredTransit Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 i wouldnt really say it was up to it lol it has lumps all over it from the 'filler' (mostly resin shaped with and angle grinder very strong ) but it runs , If it looks OK in the photos, it will look OK on camera. BTW people I have a compressor on the back of the recovery truck I am told would be up to a respray (but no spray gun) so maybe I could offer a mobile spray service!
Mr Sam Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 and heres another £26 paint job, excluding the price of the compressor as i borrowed that before a days worth of sanding and a few minutes with the gun ive been using rattle can primer for the anglia so far and really wishing id just bought a tin of it togo through the gun, trouble is when you get to the end of a can it starts to loose pressure then you end up with it spitting........of and you get a sore finger
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 stop being stingy and get it down to plough lane lol , it's booked in for prima this winter . I can't afford paint though so it will be sandy coloured with black bits on top for a few years

Stu_B Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I did satin black over the top of gloss black on my mk3 tina (well I never got around to doing the bootlid or roof ) took about 8 cans I think.
mk3cokebottle Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 cool , loving the £26 spray job . So hoping to spray mine for less than £50 then , sounds tight but i'm spending money on going fast and not bling he he we use any paint we can get hold of with a touch of petrol in it to use as thinners and to make it shiny then blast it with a cheepo lacker for race cars etc and they tend to last longer than the road cars or just go buy a tin of hammerite black and giv it the rat look
