tom28 Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 need some advice people.. currently me n me dad can't afford to build a garage to work on the escort in, so far the work ive done has been outside and as luck always is its been raining this weekend and its gettin colder now. does anyone have any ideas of what i can buy as an alternative?.. i was thinking gazebo but i don't wanna buy crappy one that just blows away.. anyone got any recommendations? thanks people!
Baz. Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 Why dont you make a tempory garage or a lean too (if you have a building close to work off) from 4 x 2 timbers and plastic corregated sheets, easy as 1,2,3,
Yeomans22 Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 get 4 fence type posts, stick them in the ground, then make a timber frame arounf your car, some plastic corredated stuff as the roof, and some big mdf as the sides and door, just basic, keep the rain etc off until u sort a better garage.
Cookie Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 keep a beady eye in the local free paper and ad trader things m8, always people giving old pre-fab garages away as long as you dis-assemble it.
vibrating_Cake Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 from a building site, rent/buy/steal those fences with the small square/rectangle mesh wire metal things that go round building sites. use this as a base, and cling film around it and somehow sort a roof out. from a gazebo maybe. looks gash but is cheap and works, a friend of mine sprayed a car in a garage like that came out alright, was summer at the time and it acted like a greenhouse lol
mk1super Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 My mate bought one of them shipping containers that go on the trains and lorries, it does the job tho, cost him 250 quid, its dented to hell but fits a car fine and was far cheaper than a garage
styut Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 I bought a metal garage - it cost £500 delivered, and does the job fine.
Rick Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 My mate bought one of them shipping containers that go on the trains and lorries, it does the job tho, cost him 250 quid, its dented to hell but fits a car fine and was far cheaper than a garage thats a good idea
escysean Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 I bought a metal garage - it cost £500 delivered, and does the job fine. Pic mate?
prefectopop Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 Failing that google gala tents, that's what we bought for the altered dragster. really easy to build, lightweight and once you've done with it you can use it for birthdays/weddings/bbqs . Ours cost about 400 quid and they did it interest free over 10 months. Just make sure you peg it down - had to respray the sides of a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow a few months ago cos the owners put it in a tent like ours and it blew over! Oops.
spitbarnatt Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 My dad was telling me there were some good temporary garages in Costco the other week £140

tom28 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 back agen, after many debates me n dad are building a garage from scratch, 20x20 ft long ill post a pic up later, base has been laid down and were now starting the framework, got loads of shelves from woolworths that i can use as racking, gona make seprate room in garage to have a bench n engine building area, gonna be the tits when its done, it's costing me alot but worth it at end of the day..
Jiffer Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 make sure you use pressure treated timber or spend some time going mad with the wood presevitive, also try and put some DPC in between the sole plate and the concrete, untreated softwood will rot quicker then an austin alegro
YOUNGY Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 buy a bouncy castle and blow it up upside down
FredTransit Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I hate to say this, but I thought this was a temporary garage. Watch yourself with the neighbours and the Planning Dept. On another forum a mate was grassed up, and had to reduce the size of his garage. It was either that, or get fined, oh AND take the garage down. It wasn't visible from the road, so it must have been the neighbours as only they could see it.
tom28 Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 thanks for the info mate, the farmers own every house where i live and he said do what ya like, real nice bloke it's bigger than i thought it would be thoo, still can't complain
julian.jay Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 You can find information on the need for consent at www.planningportal.gov.uk follow the link to domestic properties and it is listed under garages.
FredTransit Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 thanks for the info mate, the farmers own every house where i live and he said do what ya like, real nice bloke it's bigger than i thought it would be thoo, still can't complain That's good, but it's not just down to the landlord/land owner. As I said in the other case it was the neighbours, and all land is subject to the planning laws. As long as nobody has a problem with it, and it can't be seen from public property, you should be OK
caprinerd Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 wheni was doing banger racing i use to use a farm local to where i was the area i used was away from public eye`s and i kept every thing tidy the farmer use to check the area every now and then, i built a wood frame and used tarps as wall and roof, but some one in the banger racing game got the arse because the farmer said no to him, and i had to clear out, when i moved out the farmer use it as a store from his tractors, in the shelter
