60ftman Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Looks like there's plenty of room for a V8 under there though..........
105Nick Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Why put a V8 in a Mk1 though? The whole point is they're light nimble and cheap to run and easy to tune, V8s only suit Capris, yanks or hot rods.
60ftman Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 The answer is POWER. No matter how much you tune a Pinto or Kent engine, you're not going to get much more than 200, maybe 220 reliable horsepower, and SFA torque. Small-block Ford engine doesn't weigh much more than a Pinto, is just as cheap to buy, a lot cheaper to modify, and the power STARTS at 200 bhp. It's also narrower than a Rover V8 (same V as the Essex), and looks great no matter what's bolted to it. Cheap to run? I've just read a post on this forum that says 7mpg from a twin-Webered Pinto. We're getting a reliable 460bhp out of the 4.7 litre small-block V8's at work, which thrash around the tracks of the world in light, nimble cars, and constantly embarrass cars that should be a lot quicker. I had a 7-litre in a road-legal 105e which was a great deal of fun, and my current Escort Mk2 has an 8.5 litre pushing out in excess of 1000 bhp. Slightly less economical than a Webered Pinto, but far more fun.
