bigglesmk2 Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 What do we recon to 18 year olds being allowed behind the wheel on public roads
flyingbanana Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 if they can past the test then i cant see why not......dont the army teach some at that sort of age to drive their wagons....ive seen young people drivving tractors before and not driving them like a loon,..even tho tractors are not that fast
flyingbanana Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 lets put it this way these drivers are older than 18..... so age not much of a arguement to the age for driving wagons
FredTransit Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Are they dropping the minimum age then? That's only a year of experience at best. As for the Army, there are far fewer 18 year old squadies out on the roads than there could be the general public.
bigglesmk2 Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 if they can past the test then i cant see why not...... Which is fair enough , but i just dont think there going to have enough road experience to be let out in a truck. What if they did continental work and had to drive on the other side of the road in a another country. The amount of accidents and near misses i've seen with left hand drive truck's on english roads. I agree we all gotta start somewhere,i just think at 18 their not mentally ready. We all see what happens when kids turn 16 and get a scooter
escort new boy Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 We all see what happens when kids turn 16 and get a scooter That comment could offend some
bigglesmk2 Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 We all see what happens when kids turn 16 and get a scooter That comment could offend some Oh'cmon When i turned 17 i did my CBT and rode round on an mz 125. How im still here fook knows.I didnt have a clue about roads or owt,i remember having a go at driver for pulling out on me on an island....he was on my right for fooksake. I'd take my bike to work in the snow for a laugh I fell off it once and the throttle stuck open,i still had hold of part of the bike and it spun round and ran me over ..... ....if that aint stupid then i dont know what is . My mates where all the same as me and i see youngsters still doing the same sort of stuff now I know there are the few that know how to behave on a scooter but im yet to see one. Theres good and bad in all age, race and religion
escort new boy Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 mate wasnt having a dig! I no what you mean
flyingbanana Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 if they can past the test then i cant see why not...... Which is fair enough , but i just dont think there going to have enough road experience to be let out in a truck. but that could also be said if say a 25 year old has just got his car lience and went stright to do their hgv lience.....still the same amount of experiance......obv age might play a part it in but not always
100e pard Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 All you ever hear one the news is them banging on about young drivers blah blah blah. So letting them drive heavy goods is gonna cause some problems surely. Iv been drivin best part of 3 years and i dont think i could handle somethin of that size. Hats off to the pro's cause they have got some serious skills
evil knievel Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 Being a Lorry Driver is a very skilled and responsible job. 18 year olds that don't show skill and responsibilty won't pass the test. That's what it's for. Admittedly experience is a factor but perhaps a probationary period would be introduced if it's really a problem. Personally I don't think I would even pass the test let alone have the confidence to go out on the road!
shakey n his fezz Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 i got my hgv liscence part of my army training and i can drive hgv if im in uniform and working
Ken B Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 What do we recon to 18 year olds being allowed behind the wheel on public roads Has this not been going on for a while now? I did my class 2, 3 years ago and there were loads of them there under this Government young drivers scheme they have going. My bosses son passed his class 1 earlier this year and he had only just turned 18. He's quite good actually. He certainly aint no worse than some of the other numbs I come across on the roads., if fact some of the numbs we have at our place you have to question their ability in a car!!!
Admin Mk2Jo Posted September 11, 2009 Admin Report Posted September 11, 2009 It's a new law since yesterday. Report here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/the_p ... 001544.stm Personally, I don't think that most young drivers have enough experience or maturity to be in charge of such a huge and potentially lethal vehicle. Here is a quote from the DSA with regard to new drivers: "Newly-qualified drivers and their passengers accounted for 300 - one in five - of all car deaths in Britain in 2006"

Here is a quote from the DSA with regard to new drivers: "Newly-qualified drivers and their passengers accounted for 300 - one in five - of all car deaths in Britain in 2006" I dunno, having seen all manner of stunts, bad driving and accidents in which a car was catapualted into my lane by another lorry who wasn't paying attention, I dont think it will be much worse. As the mentioned incidents are all by drivers who should know better. Time will tell.
one-day Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 why have they droped age limit used to be 21 and then u had to have experience b4 u got a job have they gone mad but like mentioned age has not a lot to do with it really because ive seen some right nob head lorry drivers at an older age and yes i drive class1 for a living.
Ken B Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I suspect this has come about as a result of this young drivers scheme I mentioned earlier. I think the age limit may have already been 18 in Europe, and this was the Governments way of introducing it slowly. You had to be sponsored by the firm you worked for and you had to complete so many hours proper driving before you got your full licence. It seems they now doing away with all that.
Fiesta Steve Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 You've been able to class 1 at 18 for years, its nothing new, under the young drivers scheme I was let loose in 7.5 tons at 17 too, I shouldn't have been allowed
bigglesmk2 Posted September 11, 2009 Author Report Posted September 11, 2009 I never heard of under 21's driving class 1 or class 2 trucks on public roads for a job unless they were in such as the army. Werent the governmaent on about moving the minimum age limit to drive a car to 18 ? and even then limit them to how many passengers they can have in their car at any one time and stop them from driving late at night ? But there ok in a truck to drive all the hours of the day anywhere even continental work WTF ?
bomber1 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I never heard of under 21's driving class 1 or class 2 trucks on public roads for a job unless they were in such as the army. But there ok in a truck to drive all the hours of the day anywhere even continental work WTF ? wilko is right at 18 you could be put through your hgvs if sponserd by a firm. you could only drive for that firm. tbh ive had my hgv2 since 2005 and i think its calmed me down when in a car. tho i still drive to quick some times i now dont drive like a mary. ive had my hgv1 for over2 yrs now and cant get any work with it as no experiance and no one will give u a chance to prove your self. all this will do is give the driving schools more work but these new drivers cpc are coming in later this year where you do 1 day of theory each year. so if all these young drivers arent working are they going to fork out even more money for something there not using?
bomber1 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 the other thing is who at 18 has 2 grand to put up front to get there hgv license
mk1super Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 What ever he has had make mine a double
bomber1 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 ^^^ that does nothing for proper drivers that take driving hgv's seriously
stevepeanut Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 I would like to see a lot more unmarked police cars on the motorway, most HGV drivers are very professional skilled drivers. But over the last few years that I have been on motorways I have seen some utter lunatics. I am still amazed at the amount of HGVs that travel 10 meters behind the one in front. Being allowed to drive one at 18 is worrying, there should be at least a few years in a car/3.5 van first
caprinerd Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 what company is going to get insurance for 18 year olds to drive class one or even two for that matter,
