This whole argument pisses me off as quality of work or mooney dont come in to it. its attitude and willingness to have a go and learn. seems to me someone thinks this attitude will put um out of buisness

If I had all the money in the world I would still build them myself. I enjoy the process and happen to have accidentaly found I have a (little bit of) talent for it, some do not and need to buy the stuff they can't make, and pay someone to build it for them.

On the other hand, all those knobs who just chuck wads of cash at a motor without even trying to have a go themselves, then brag about how much they spent and how fookin fantastic their cheque book motor is can kiss my hairy arse

it cost enough just to buy my escort, so fook am i going to start paying people to change the engine and all that,

i blew my engine, so i had a go myself changed that and the gearbox, brakes, and all the rest of the stuff,

all i have sent the car away for is welding, as i simply have never done that before and it needs to be done right,

then fellow osf members helped me with my exhaust and lowered my front suspension, this cost me 2 crates of stella,

my car has been built, just a bit of help along the way from other osf members.

i paid to have my car built and the bloke who did it was a use less prick so due to the fact i had got in debt getting a piece off sh.t built when it came down to putting it right i had no option but to do it myself and i do now enjoy it but if it had gone to plan i would have been driving my car and having fun for the last 8 years rather than putting things right and there are certain thing s that unless you know what your doing your just wasteing time and money i had my engine built the second time by a pro as i thought if i cock it up having spent thousands on parts and put a rod through the block that really would have been the last straw the same can be said for my rear anti roll bar i cant even understand the page of equations that came with it let a lone do the tig welding(that may change buying a tig welder) and does it really matter you can build a cossie escort with a debit card and a rally design catalouge but if it beats most thing s on a track and you enjoy it and the big question you can afford it then do it

i am not a fan of all this built not bought stuff,if you have the skill, space and time to build your own car then grate,if you dont but love old cars then why shouldn't you be able to pay someone to build you a car.

i was originaly going to build a car with the help of friends and the odd pro but when my escort came up for sale with so many parts i was going to use,it made sence to buy it as its saved me a fortune.since owning it i have worked on it myself with the help of friends and fitted parts to make the car my own.

whats the matter with each to their own and if another old ford gets saved because someone is willing to throw cash at it great this argument has been around for years when into the custom car thing many years ago there was allways people who went and bought cars that were built to perfection with big cash thrown at it but at the end of the day it is still the same it is what we enjoy that matters i just love fords thats all that should count

I agree that it make's no difference whether a car is built or bought really

my cortina however falls into the "built" camp because

a , I've always wanted to build something from scratch

b, I enjoy the challenge of over coming challenges using my genius :? rather than my wallet (i'm basically tight as a ducks arse)

But mainly

c, i cant afford to pay someone else to do it

nothing agaist " bought" cars at all though

Big G , you defend the home builds , i'll defend the shop builds, and i'm the only one of the 'shops' that is commenting, like i comment and answer peoples queries on how to do this and how to do that, people phone up and i'll take the time to talk them through things, advise them, or just give encouragement.

I've been answering questions on OSF since it first started .. and if you think i'm doing that to get work i would have dropped OSF like a lead balloon, as i've had 2 jobs from OSF, one set of link bars, and one van.

I'm here because i like cars, and like creating cars and i like helping people.

Its not a business to me, its a hobby.

Built and Bought... Does any body really care?

A car's a car at the end of the day, and a nice car is a nice car whether it is built or bought. All cars are "Built" otherwise they'd just be a pile of plastic and metal on the floor.

I have a Mk2 RS2000 which I have done a lot of work to after its 14 year ownership. Last year, engine out, engine bay resprayed, rear arches replaced, sprayed etc.

So, was this car bought or built?......well, my view is that whatever I could do, I did, just to keep on top of it. I did not have the skills, time or patience to do a rebuild like some peeps on here.

Two years ago when I saw my newly built MK1, I bought it.......coz I loved it when I set eyes on the car. So this car was BUILT (by someone) and BOUGHT by me. Either way, it has had a load of love during its build and its ownership , so what is the issue?.

As long as the builders / buyers are passionate Classic Ford owners is the main thing in my view.

It just seems that any cat that has got a realy nice engine or paint job, or is race spec etc, is slotted into the bought category.

Could this whole thing be an excuse for people having cars that are not quite as well turned out as others?

I know i wouldnt want to, nor have the room or tools to link and turret a car, nor could i build a 2.3 N/A Cossie with big valves etc.

But, i could rattle-can my car on the driveway, chuck a pinto in it that i have dremelled the head on and say that i have built it and scoff and expensive builds.

(dont mean to go on, i guess winning that cheque book car trophy affected more than i thought!!) :?

You're not alone Sam I agree entirely, especially about the rattle can comment. In fact I find this whole business quite distasteful which is precisely why I said it was divisive on page 1 of this thread.

Makes no odds to me really.

Would someones house be judged on weather or not they'd built, wired, plumbed it themselves??

Some people have neither the time or ability to build their own cars. However if ability is lacking then its a great opportunity to learn. (Never learn to weld on your car, practice on scrap first!)

I think a greater degree of satisfaction is probably achieved if it's mostly your own creation or spec.

I usually begin with an esentially solid car/shell and then build it to my own spec. I now do it ALL myself including welding & fabrication work, paint etc. Only from learning and guidence and having a go. I couldn't ave done it a few years ago..

Wise words I think Mick.

I don't think we should let this topic divide us as a community, we all have a love for our old Fords whether we have the skills or not to keep them on the road or modify them to our preferences. I don't think it makes anyone less of an enthusiast when they pay someone else to do the work, but like I said before, I hate it when people brag about how great their car is, just because they threw money at it.

A bloke I know has tens of thousands in an Escort, but has not once been big headed about it. In fact he's one of the niest blokes you'll meet (and knowlegable too  )

This thread has got ridiculous !

All i asked is a simple question :

Q.1 Did you BUILD the car yourself ?

OR

Q.2 Did you BUY the car already built ?

:lol::lol:

I guess that Forums by their very nature raise debates when a simple question is asked. Much the same as when someone is asked a question face to face, would you recieve a one word answer or an elaborate answer??

Maybe a poll would ave been a good idea!
