aden Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 i built mine but if i had the money i would send it away and have it done again
sambo Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Its just another word for 'budget' or in some cases 'bad taste', sometimes even the word bodge springs to mind. chequer plate is my favorite 'built' car component.
DAZZA Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Blimey, long thread.......... what was the question again? Oh yeah... I got mine with the mods as I dont have the knowledge, tools or facility! However, the bits that I have done have made it mine and a little more pleasing on the eye....... If I had an open cheque id have bought one. So just coz youre into cars does that mean that you have to do it on your own? Bull.
over_head_cam Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 From what I can gather, many people on this thread would say that any modification not done to someones OSF by a professional is crap, dangerous, in bad taste, probably illegal and likely to kill puppies and kittens. Have we been infiltrated by the car hating government?
X-pack-Glyn Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Me....defo a builder.... thats why the deal was done..i finnished the capri and it sat for months...id really ran out of stuff to do to it and completely lost interest... i like to build my own car from scratch and when they get sold its like..."thats glyns old car". I did buy a 3.1 x pack once and owned it for about 7 months, i did odds and sods but really it was someone elses creation so it was passed on. we've really tucked into the escort and gone ballistic on it, ordered the last of the panels this afternoon, the colours are settled now and its gona be in for paint over xmas.
Admin Vista Posted October 27, 2009 Admin Report Posted October 27, 2009 From what I can gather, many people on this thread would say that any modification not done to someones OSF by a professional is crap, dangerous, in bad taste, probably illegal and likely to kill puppies and kittens. Have we been infiltrated by the car hating government? Not at all Phil, I think it's more a reaction to the thinly veiled suggestion from some of the home builders that anyone who doesn't do their own work on their car is somehow less dedicated to the scene. Personally I'm always keen to praise the efforts of those that achieve good results in a shed, but perhaps given the recent trend to adversely judge the choices made by those who "contract out" parts of their work, I should be more critical in future?
Mr.Sumo Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 I give up i gave up 4 pages ago.......
Skoty Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 im built coz i cant afford to buy a already completed car and i wouldnt want to, it makes me have something to be proud of. i think what it means is, bought would mean you bought the car complete and ready to use, and built would mean you started off with a standard car and made it how you want, not necessarily building every component. i think that buying a already completed car is cheating really, coz its someone elses work.
BIGKEV Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I like this thread I might get a sticker made up saying " Bodged not Bought" that may please some

Noodles Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I like this thread I might get a sticker made up saying " Bodged not Bought" that may please some I will have one too
jimbo Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Bought.....Now bodged....and, Mr Camelot willing, [re]built (one day) This is the shittest thread ever. I might buy a TR.....the owners can't be any less interesting. No offence meant to you Sumo mate. I'm sure you didn't intend for this to happen......and I hope I answered your question succinctly.
old skool estate Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Bought and not built! huxleys mk1 escort estate! which most of you would probably love to own! i love it think its great! im a new ish member to mk1 escort previous into mk1 fiesta's which i built my self and spent ££££s. i must say its not much of a welcome to a site with so much criticism who cares? really? i feel like hiding away and not showing this car next year! sad really! to finish it off i have built and bought! it makes no difference! This thread really has not made me feel welcome to this site
evil knievel Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Bought and not built!huxleys mk1 escort estate! which most of you would probably love to own! i love it think its great! im a new ish member to mk1 escort previous into mk1 fiesta's which i built my self and spent ££££s. i must say its not much of a welcome to a site with so much criticism who cares? really? i feel like hiding away and not showing this car next year! sad really! to finish it off i have built and bought! it makes no difference! This thread really has not made me feel welcome to this site Don't feel like that my friend. This post is purely discussional. The fact of whether or not your car was built or bought should not matter. We are here for a mutual love of Old Fords, whether they were built, bought, or immaculately conceived. It makes no odds really. At the end of the day it is still an OSF.
Mr.Sumo Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 This is fcukin ridiculous ! I asked a simple fookin question and end up with 7 pages of ..... ! All i asked was if you built your car or bought it . I couldn"t give two fooks if you did or didn"t...i don"t care if you got a shell and made it your own , or paid someone else to build the fookin thing . If you have an open cheque book then crack on , if you don"t , do it yourself . I am not , and never have been , the sort of fella that will slag someones car off if they have thrown 70 grand or 7 fookin quid at it.....your car , your money , your way of doing things . What has pissed me off now is that i said on the original opening page to this thread....i was proud / happy for once to have secured a BUILT car because it was the best deal i could get for my Wagon and also the deal was done because i got a BOUGHT car which i can personnalise without throwing vast somes of cash at to which i don"t , and probably will never , have to throw at her . I have the utmost respect to anyone that builds there own car , and the same amount of respect for those that chose to get there car built to there specification . End of . Oh , and just for good measure , i put 1500 quid into the Wagon....so i can be Built as well as Bought .
sambo Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 There is some confusion here i think. Yes, your original question was simple.... "Did you buy your car like it is, or did you build it" but, the thing is, people have and myself included, muddle up your question with the phrase "built not bought" which has been invented by people who are proud to have built thier cars with little or no professional input. My answer to your question is: I bought the car, all linked, turreted, as a rolling shell but i fitted the engine/s gearbox, exhaust, painted the interior etc. I got a pro to paint the car and bought any engine i have fitted second hand.
MK2Ed Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 mine is built well half built as its not on the road yet so far we have: cheating (stripped out with nos) and standard ish without nos 4door and 2 door built and bought have i missed any? so what is the next thing they can throw at us? Think there's a couple more mate : Pinto v Xflow 13's, 15's or puff daddies Old skool, new skool Duratec or N/A YB Jap & Vauxhall or Ford MKI or MKII And there's probably a couple more... But I wouldn't take any of them to heart TBH...........
MG-Ford Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Mine are all built, but TBH does it matter as it down to the person. Some people dont have the skills/knowledge to build or would just perfer to outsource the work, whilst other sare the opposite. In my own view if its bought or built I look at the car and the owner in the same way EPIC
brettp Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 i think this is a good thread better than the whats it worth ,pinto cross flow usual debates and why do people all get on there high horse if you bought your car or built it its only disscussion and i do agree with the chequer plate and would add them shi...ty fake braided hose end jubilee clips normal hose is much better
over_head_cam Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Breathe Iain It's standard forum practice for threads to go off half cocked. Personally I think it's good debate, but I think sometimes people get a bit excited and start choosing sides or creating a divide. As many have said on this post (the sensible ones) it doesn't matter what/how/where/how much but the fact that it's an OSF. No-one is better than anyone else (though some think they are and don't mind sharing that information) we all love out motors - End of
BIG G Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 This is a bit pants as im pretty proud of my efforts and the built not bought sticker thats on my strut brace is a statement of pride and not to piss any one off or to brag,, just plain proud
