V8ian Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Go for a V8 you can get a brand new "crate engine from the States for as little as $3000 ready to run all you have to do is plumb it in and turn the key check out jegs motor sport and summit racing , if you have deep pockes you could buy a Roush racing 302 V8 ready to go with over 400bhp for $5000 the problem with "New Crate" motors, seems DVLA or some other agency have decided these are new engines and have to comply with new emission laws, so its cats and all sorts, then I have a feeling once you go down this route they may be able to force the car to have saftey checks in line with the modern cars, worth talking to RealSteel for the correct details, I may be going off on a tangent, I suppose if you can get a Crate engine built around an old core, making it a rebuilt, you may get away with it,
xpackken Posted November 6, 2009 Author Report Posted November 6, 2009 v8ian thanks for help . You certainly know your shit and am sure you may get the odd pm off me if i go v8 i dont think dvla will be knowing about my new engine it was bought 2nd hand off ebay just very very good condition ha . Wer are these engines for 3k anyone got a link . And does turnkey mean everything comes with it . What other expense will i need to spend out on
V8ian Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 here you are, allways worth a look, But beware, anything that you buy from Summit may have an overseas preimum for handeling, so its worth having a decent order, or, as I do get a mate to import the stuff for me via a shipping agent in the states that he uses all the time, http://www.summitracing.com/ http://www.jegs.com/ http://www.speedwaymotors.com/
brettp Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 i got a v8 capri and the sound is UNBEATABLE yes you can get the same power out of a turbo cossie as a n/a v8 but unless you really know your stuff it s goiing to be all or nothing power and people blather on about how the weight f.ks up the handling but i dont think it screws it up as much as a tubo kicking in at three grand a blowing the tyres away i have only been in a few turbo cars and with anti lagg etc im sure the problem can be put right but in my opinion there is no substitute for a v8 REAL power there is alot to be said for the how much easier it is to put a cossie lump in a capri v8 s are not a 5 minute install like every one makes out
ASBO CAPRI Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Go small block chevy bit more potential than sbf. I do like cossie motors but it would be rude not to put V8 in a mk1 capri. True what brett says about people being worried about the weight of a small block but it really isn't an issue. put it this way an alloy headed small block chevy is only a little heavier than a 3.0 essex and do 3ltr capris handle bad? The emence torque and horsepower more than make up for a slight increase in weight. Oh and you just can't beat the sound
zetecmk2 Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 remember guys and gals.......no noise restrictions on pre '83 cars by order of the govt! straight thru pipes a gogo!!!!
puddy Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Yank v8 = right amount of valves (16) , wrong amount of cyls. Cossie yb = right amount of valves, right amount of cyls (4) Cosworth, there is no substitute ! puddy
V8ian Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Yank v8 = right amount of valves (16) , wrong amount of cyls. Cossie yb = right amount of valves, right amount of cyls (4) Cosworth, there is no substitute ! puddy Mark, I remember a long converstion we had over a few Teas down the ace reference a turbo SBF V8 for the cortina
xpackken Posted November 7, 2009 Author Report Posted November 7, 2009 great thread by the way guys it seems am not the only one that finds it hard to choose between these 2 engines i must say am swinging towards a v8 now for the noise i dont think i will be able to afford a crate turn key motor thou so the hunt will start for a decent 2nd hand one (wer do i start ) asbo do you know if the bulk head needs to be cut with a chevy small block and is gearbox am issue (witch one)
MinesGT Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Not sure about the mk1 engine bay, but i have had a sbc in a mk3 with no cutting or bashing the bulkhead. The key to this is using the right distributor. To be honest, the sbc did actually look a little lost!! There is a 350 sbc with autobox on e bay for £800, add to that bthe engine mounts , gearbox mounts and prop you have mentioned, and it should be in for less than a grand! go for it!!
DarrenM Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Keep it Ford and V8. 302 is best as it's a fair bit lighter than the 351. Mine has alloy heads and I have never thought it front heavy as it is about the same weight as the Essex with them. Mine revs to 6500 as well but I change at 6000 . I'd get a 302, put a Fox body sump on it and a T5 Mustang gear box. Atlas axle, custom prop, engine and gearbox mounts and get a bigger rad in and you're nearly there. Stay with a carb and the wiring and fuel system will be simplest. I am stripping my MK3 down and fitting the running gear into my MK1.
bomber1 Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 my m8 has thrown a 302 with auto box at his mk1 capri that was set up for a 3ltr essex and 5speed and its fell straight in though u will need the double hump sump
evil knievel Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 remember guys and gals.......no noise restrictions on pre '83 cars by order of the govt! straight thru pipes a gogo!!!! I didn't know that!!! My Capper is a 1980 and you can't beat the sound and feel of a V8 pushing you down the road
puddy Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Yank v8 = right amount of valves (16) , wrong amount of cyls. Cossie yb = right amount of valves, right amount of cyls (4) Cosworth, there is no substitute ! puddy Mark, I remember a long converstion we had over a few Teas down the ace reference a turbo SBF V8 for the cortina Slight difference between a £500 , 150 bhp rover v8 and a $20,000 1000 bhp twin turbo'd mustang five O mate puddy
capriclive Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 gotta be V8. im building mk1 cologne arched capper as well. got a 5lt mustang with autobox. dropped straight in with no body mods at all apart from need new engine mounts. you do need a double bowl sump though
kevmk2 Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Yank v8 = right amount of valves (16) , wrong amount of cyls. Cossie yb = right amount of valves, right amount of cyls (4) Cosworth, there is no substitute ! puddy I agree mate And with fuel consumption mine recently did 120 miles on £17 worth of fuel, its better on fuel than my 530 bmw Thats the thing with Cossie turbo, you can cruise on the motorway at around 75-80mph in 5th gear at around 3000-3500rpm depending on diff ratio, and still have the power when you want it to go up to silly speeds. A T5 box goes straight into a capri tunnel too.
