 Its been bugging me for a while so I thought I'd ask. Whats the difference between throttle bodies and carbs? Are they better? Can you use them on older engines? Do you need an ECU or any other fandangle components to make 'em run?

Cheers Azz

Throttle bodys are simaler in apperance to carbs but the fuel is injected under high pressure and the fueling controled by an ECU such as an emrald or mega squirt. The advantage is much more presice fueling and hence more power better drivabilty and better economy than twin carbs. Though there a lot more expensive to buy than carbs.

Advantages I have personaly found,

No cold start probs, same power, but runs smoothly from tick over to max, econamy, no pop's and backfires, wont die in traffic jams, don't go out of tune, used to run weber's on the Crossflow and Pinto engines, then changed to TB's, the big downside is the cost......

Would you say they are worth the cost?

Yep. You cant beat the driveability of T/B's. You can run full race cams etc and not suffer the low down spitting and coughing as you can compensate for the fueling and ignition with T/B's and mappable ignition.

Got to agree, the power is the same, generally you run smaller T/Bs than carbs so the throttle response is better, fuel consumption and drivability is deffo better even with a really stupid cam! My ECU allows me to run 3 different maps, I can run a long distance nice friendly map, a race map and a nitrous map, all at the flick of a switch, even with my 4.0 engine, I can get 33 mpg on a run, race, run mid 12s and drive it home without touching anything

Thats not bad :)

Would you say the MPG increase is worth the extra £££'s? I'm talking T/B's VS Carbs here.

I doubt if I would go back to carb now, but the drivability, and consumption has to be a big consideration

throttle bodies do cost alot when you have them set up right they are well worth the cost you know you have them when you put your foot down, they kick in straight away, you wont regret buying them

Deffo worth the cost! the engine management system that is with the system (DTA) is now set up to retard the timing 4 deg. when the Nos is armed, just an extra offshoot!

Am I the only one to have considered the sound? Mmmmm Webers ;) ;)

T/B's sound much better imo. I have had 48's on a N/A cossie and then ran parralell Jenceys and the Jenveys sound sooo much better i reckon.

Next up is tapered T/b's.... i reckon they will sound better still 8)

Like Steve said, you get what you pay for and t/b's are much better than carbs. Although, maybe the offset in cost is probaby a little too much if you know what i mean.

Throttle bodies can be single without injectors too
