I liked my XR3 back in the day, but my Missus always got wet feet if we went out in the rain.

I also remember when the XR3 was first launched, my Mate had a Vauxhall Chevette running a 2 litre Pinto with 45s. Proper sleeper car. Anyway, he would go hunting XR3s with a passion and used to aggravate the owners something terrible after doing the deed. Was actually quite funny looking back, even though we all know it was childish, allegedly... :-D

Is there such a thing as a "Retro" car? I'm not totally convinced on their "classic" status but they do look frickin' cool and I'd love a decent reliable one as my daily hack.

A Grey RS1600i oooo yes!!

spose the xr3  have the same classic status as a corolla twin cam astra gte ,manta gte ,golf mk1 gti,

or an xr4i sierra ,even some of the later capris....very few lads or lasses in old skool scene wouldn't

make a bee line to look over one at a show.

yano they are definatly old skool

most lads and lasses growing up in the 80's will have remembered

them and the xr2 scooting about with th raspy exhaust note at almost 3k revs

not up on my later escorts but always liked the shape of them since i had a scalextric model when young. whats the model with the decals going accross the front of the bonnet? always like looking at them at shown in mint standard form. modified body work just reminds me of my max power days when i started driving, but luv a minter now

Yeah they are nice now. Lot of them being built stock body and big power engines. My mate had his S1 RST on Comp TH2s in a Ford mag this year, it's a superb car. He keeps nagging me to get my Mk1 back on the road. Lol

I still cannot make my mind up about Mk3 Escorts, they are just on the cusp of when cars turned into soulless white goods, like kitchen appliances. I definitely don't like Mk4's, but a mk3 xr3 (not xr3i) has a naggling appeal sneaking up on me.

always kinda judged modern cars with plastic bumpers etc.

tbh the mk3 escort although had plastic ends like rs2000

cortinas etc they still had full size wings and metal bumpers

as said before capri 1987 classic

Cortina 1982

escort mk3 1981

escort mk3 xr3i 1986

they have as much right as the rest for classic status imo

Yet they seem very cheap at the mo. Worth buying and storing away?

Wish I was 10 quid behind you if ya reckon 8 grand is cheap for a 1.6 car with 100,000 miles on the clock, no matter how cool & mint condition it looks!

Think trouble with classic fords now is that everyone in pushing the prices up on the coat tails of the mk1 Escort.  Decent mk1's and mk2's have pushed up beyond most peoples reaches as a toy/hobbie so people are looking for alternatives, sellers are latching onto that and pushing the prices up of everything else with a blue oval badge.  I've seen 1.1 mk2 fiestas that people are trying to get over 2 grand for.  I've got nowt against em they're lovely little cars but seriously!!!

Gotta disagree with you in as far as the mk1 or 2 toys

costs a lot of money to make the show / clean toy

and if you creat the mint toy its twice that now.

decent paint job sets you back up to 4k

that's not including welding panels mechanical

interior .

list is endless

cheaper buy now than build as like a house the budgets arnt  realistic

That's the whole point I'm (probably badly) trying to make. God know's, my wallets fully aware what a restoration costs and I'm not going for concours, just a usable "toy" for having fun in and going to the odd show when the weather's nice. But at the end of the day it's a car, the whole point of the invention of the car was to drive, and that's why people loved the MK1 & MK2 Escort, because they are such great fun to drive.  Being pushed a long by the rear wheels, a great driving position & handling far in advance of it's day, that's what everyone revelled in! But because the top models are getting so rare as time goes on, they're getting more expensive and people are treating them as museum artefacts that never see a public road.  This makes the prime examples appeal to collectors with lots of spare cash to play with.

I'm not having a go, people enjoy the cars for different reasons and if someone takes pride in having the most perfect pristine example out there fair play, I'll be there drooling over their pride and joy with everyone else, but I still think the reason that other Fords are going up in price is because us muggles on a tight budget can't afford the car we really hanker after so are looking to alternatives.  If I didn't have kids and other commitments I wouldn't be scrimping and saving to get a knackered 1300 GL back on the road.  Traders have latched on to this and are gradually pushing up the price of everything with a blue oval on the front that's pushing 25/30 years old.

I like em a lot, definitely a classic

I think the mk3 is the only escort version I haven't had though - I should rectify that one day

but they are not an OSF
