Finally my 1968 Mk1 3litre Apache Escort converted by Jeff Uren in 1972. Currently still being overhauled but set to [hopefully] be a stunner once complete. It's up and running so not a great deal left to do before a strip and dip before paint

A rare beast indeed, few people around in the scene today who've heard of one of those much less seen one!

The R1 mini takes a LOT of getting used to. Both throttle and clutch are more akin to a switch than a regular peddle. Even with the Quaife LSD it still torque steers like mental.

The sound is amazing though. When I nail it you see people looking about for a fast road bike. They look quite confused when they see me tootling past. The one drawback lies with the gearbox

What gear doesn't bike engines have? Reverse!

You can get electrically operated ones but I haven't bothered yet. I feel somewhat of a kerb-crawling pervert in the supermarket though. I have to drive around and around looking for a place I can drive into with a vehicle so loud it draws more attention than I'd care to have. You can guarantee I'll be forced to drive past the same person many times and they just look at me stupid.

The VW is a labour of love/hate. As it's all Porsche and heavily customised so when things break they cost an arm and a leg to fix. I dropped a lambo Murcielago at the lights a while back before removing the NOS. With the NOS it would pull a wheelie. Not much granted. But the front wheels would lift a good 2 to 3 inches off the floor. His face was a look of abject horror having ben beaten off the lights by a 45 year old camper!

For those that don't know, the Apache is from the same stable as the Cortina Savage; from Jeff Uren at Race Proved/Jeff Uren Limited..

The full range of models were the V6 Transit Motorhome, Savage V6 3 litre Cortina, Cheetah 2.5 litre Cortina, Comanche 170, 180 or 190 Capri [number denoting bhp] and my Apache v6 Escort. Research indicates 2200 Savages were created, 350 Comanche, 110 Cheetah, between 50 and 60 Transits [no detailed data available] and 46 Apache. The cost of conversion was £600 plus an additional £200 for the 200 bhp upgrade. Considering  circa 868 Lotus Escorts were made the Apaches is indeed a rare machine.

Later models of Apache had the steering column moved to situate the driver more central to the car. The drawback was the inability to see the dials properly. Mine is an earlier model so doesn't have that particular mod

Would love to have seen that Lambo incident!

I remember going with my older brother to look at a MK1 Superspeed that was on a dealers forecourt, my dad ended up talking him out of it and he bought a MK2 RS2 instead. He still regrets not buying to this day, it even though we did build a couple of 3.0ltrs ourselves back in the 80's

I wouldnt dream of building a 3.0 Escort now, but there is something quite romantic & period about it   and would love a S/S or Apache :-P

This is one of them, the other was an Xpacked bodied MK2 but sadly no pics of that one

them r1 minis must be getting quite rare nowadays with most people going for vtecs or redtops but it must be fun to show up people what horsepower was that camper

342 bhp. It goes quite well for an object as aerodynamic as a building brick ;p

I wouldn't put a V6 in one either to be honest. There's better power elsewhere but you are right, "there is something quite romantic & period about it"

Think you've all seen all of mine but here goes

Mk1 RS2000 I bought in 2004, I'd regretted selling my GXL Capri in early 2003 and knew I'd not be happy with buying another one when I'd already got that one mint so after 4 capris of varying types, decided on a complete change. The RS was already very good and quite high spec when I bought it but needed a bit of fettling. New chrome, refurbed wheels, a Mk1 RS centre console and 4 pot brakes later I was happy with the looks but wanted more from the mechanics. Cue a stroked 2.2 Pinto from the now defunct JRE Racing Engines

The Alfa Montreal followed in late 2005. I'd actually been after a new bike and had saved my pennies for a brand spanking Harley V-Rod, I thought they were mustard! Then 5 days before I planned to order the Harley a friend was killed on his GSXR Suzuki. It put me off bikes and I never went back :-( ......but did I do the sensible thing and re-bank the money? What do you reckon?

No, I stumbled across this car while browsing eBay. I knew squat about them and had never heard of them before but it was love at first sight and it looked mint with just 10 minutes to go and just 1 bid at £8k. By the time I'd read the listing and looked hard at the pics I had just 5 minutes to research it before auction end. I put in a bid of £8005 about 20 seconds before auction end, won the car and thought WTF have I done! I thought "F**K" for about the next 8 years while I was trying to get it running right! Fortunately the value of them has spiralled so the £20k or so it cost me for two engine rebuilds (don't ask about the shyster who did the first one) rebuild of the mechanical HP injection pump in Switzerland and specialist parts from the US is now less of a concern as the car is now worth around £60k (phew!).

Since then it's had a few upgrades too, limited to brakes and suspension though. The engines are already pretty trick as they're an all alloy hi revving 2.6 litre V8 with quad overhead cam, fuel injection, electronic ignition and dry sump lubrication all coming as standard.

Lastly the van. Also an ebay purchase, I wanted to do something I could really call my own and that hadn't been done to the same extent before. Well there's nothing that hadn't been done to 2 and 4 door mk1 and 2 escorts before and then I came across a low mileage (22k) mk2 van on ebay. Lightbulb moment. A van that can mix it with anything! And so I got talking to Gary of Retromotorsport..........you can read more about it (if you haven't already) by clicking the link below my sig. There's been a few subtle changes to the engine bay since the final pic, nothing performance related though.
