changed mine to historic at the post offce at the begining of the month, i was under the impression before i went that it had to be done at time of taxing, so MOT and insurance would apply, but she offered me the option to tax or sorn, but that was after she checked insurance and mot were in place

Yes, it has been rolling at 40 years old for a few years now. Currently anything manufactured before January 1st 1976 will qualify.

The last two letters of your chassis number will decode to a year and month. If it was registered in December though, it's highly unlikely that it was manufactured as far back as 76 in order for it to qualify as Historic Vehicle a year earlier

Yep rolling 40 years, will probably stop just before 2018 knowing my luck as car is a 78. I am patiently waiting, and before anyone pipes up, the car will be finished before then

Just to confuse all of you, I recently sold my mk2 ,the one on my profile, which was a service  trimmed shell, registered on a w 1980.  it is a rs2000 ,Sent logbook off in new owners name, it was taxed as private light goods, £129 ,still taxed till November, received  a letter back from dvla saying it was originally manufactured 1975 and qualifies for historic tax, and received a cheque  back today for £129

Result ,didn't have to do anything and didn't expect anything back, for once dvla have done ok

There is talk of it yes.

That is only a small part of a potential large shake up.  No MoT for vehicles over 30 though our government are suggesting 40 years is the way forward, and possibly enforcing the 8 point rule if they can find enough people left in DVSA to do it. Its actually called vehicles with historic interest (VHI) Oh sorry yes they're suggesting possibly self certification that your car is within the 8 points therefore qualifies as a VHI otherwise its BIVA for you. Yea you gotta love these new proposals. Bloody ridiculous. All you need for cars over 30, regardless of mods is a basic check. Brakes, lights, corrosion check, basic suspension check, anything else glaringly not right.

theyve been doing similar things in france for years now, they will eventually make it so old cars cant go on the roads.

Has anyone actually gone onto the site to answer any of the questions and say what they think of the proposals? From just having a quick read which is difficult as those documents are not made for quick reading, Does it mean that a lot of modified cars will still need testing?

Are all of the 40 year old cars whether needing a test or not, still exempt from paying car tax?

 

As always just sounds like a load of waffle to confuse almost if not everyone.

After a little bit of advice from anyone who's registered their car recently for Historic Tax, as this threads a bit old. 

OK, my car is currently insured and recently MOTd. Sorned it 2 days ago, as my tax ran out at the end of Sept. 

Date of first registration for my car is 16th Oct 79.  I'm now assuming I can get free road tax after this date. 

If so, I'd prefer not to send my documents to the DVLA, knowing they are notorious for losing stuff, even when sent registered. 

Can the request for Historic Tax be done online without sending anything off, or do I need to take my MOT and insurance into a Post Office? 

I plan on continuing to get my yearly MOT checks done, but do I need to fill out anything regarding this as well? 

Any advice on what you guys have done is much appreciated. 👍
