Exhaust wrap

Obviously this stiff exists for a reason, to reduce temperature in the engine bay by containing manifold heat within.

But, in real world experiences, do people generally think it makes that much difference for a road car? never used it personally.

And if so, how many metres did you get through wrapping a manifold? hard to gauge how many metres it would take 15m, 25m?

Ceramic coating sort of replaces it now and looks much nicer.

Yeah I've heard of that, but I suspect it costs a bomb, and the manifold is a 15 year old Ashley (with repairs 🤣), so probably not worth the investment in ceramic coating.

Heat wrap works well, but looks awfull if not done tidy. Always apply when the wrap is really wet and keep it tight and overlap by 50% or more to layer it up. I dont like ceramic coating due to cost and that if not done right can just fall off and gets damaged easily plus wrapping looks more Oldskool IMHO especially if you use the black graphite stuff

For a race car it is of use to keep the under bonnet temps down a bit. For a road car don't. Have seen a couple of road cars with the stuff a year or so after they put it on. The wrap keeps water / moist in contact with the manifold which then becaomes brittle / rust away in no time.

Gordy, do you remember how many metres you used to wrap a typical 4 branch?

Ceramic coating for me. Had it done on both the RS and the van. Made a difference on the van in particular. Only worth doing on a new manifold though 

Don't like wrap, retains moisture and rots out the manifold.

I bought two rolls from what i remember Colin but cant think what the meterage was? , as for rotting out the manifold as some have stated then i doubt the millage and seasons you drive in will cause this.

Yeah, it doesn't really get wet that often and out in wet and raining conditions.

While it may not be worth doing on older branch manifolds its definitely worth doing on original cast ones. The RS and Cortina ones are particularly prone to cracking with the main cause being temperature variations from inside and out. The ceramic coating contains more heat within and supposedly improves efficiency but it keeps the heat in so that the manifold cools down very slowly which sudden cooling is what causes them to crack. I have found mine still quite warm hours after switching the engine off. The added benefit is you don't have a rusty looking manifold. I chose silver to match the thermostat housing and other shiny alloy bits but just get it black if you want something more subdued.

Ahhh my eyes ...  too shiney. I wonder why you haven't fitted chromed overriders to your bumpers!

I bought 5cm x 15m titanium wrap which done my 4 branch (precrossflow GT) manifold nicely still had a fair bit left over. I've used it on many of my car's over the years never had any issues yet. Since found locking wire is a neater way to fasten it rather than the metal ties unless you have the correct tool

It wrapped all of that, down to about 2 foot under the car ( I got bored then)

It does seem bright when you first get it done but a few heat cycles and it does dull quite a bit without actually discolouring or going blue in places like stainless.

We tried 2 different makes of wrap on a 4 into 1 pre x flow manifold, after both makes broke up & fell off.

We had manifold blasted & coated just outside Horsham

Not only does it look the nutz  it has cut down under bonnet temps by loads. Also no corrosion.

Not the best photos sorry, but not the best job either, I wrapped the two middle pipes as one as was an ass to do in place, leaning over the wing with my legs in the air ( I'm only short)  Didn't want to try my luck removing the manifold as the bolts are bound to snap on me an there wouldn't be enough swear words in the world to help me through that 🤣
