Essex Boy Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 Capri is 7.9 secs to 60 when new so who knows Its weight don't help, if its small chav hatches you want to smoke off the lights you will have trouble as they are FWD and light as a feather as they are mainly plastic. A pretty sorted Pinto would be better at seeing off chav hatches its a lighter engine and tunable to over 220bhp. Pinto is cheaper on performance upgrade parts too more likely to find second hand tuning parts due to them being fitted to so many different Fords I'd go for the Pinto over the Cologne any time unless you can afford to go the V8 route Chevy 5.0 (not Rover 3.5)
Dom Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 A well sorted pinto will give a 2.8i some serious stick. My brothers got a 24v in his capri and it's been dyno'd at just over 210bhp and 200lb/ft, we haven't timed it 0-60 yet but it'll show up most stuff on the road. Yeah pintos are tuneable to over 220bhp, not cheap, but if you can afford that you might as well stick a bog standard 302 V8 or a fettled 3 litre essex in. It's a lighter engine but it's by no means light.
X-pack-Glyn Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 Pinto or cologne....... 7 colognes, 6 essexs, and lost count of the pintos.... 2.8i is lazy cruiser, 17 second qtrs..... il take the pinto any day.
Essex Boy Posted March 17, 2007 Report Posted March 17, 2007 Would a 2.9 lump be any better?? buy a complete 12V 2.9i granny for pennies on ebay
lazybones Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 depends on what you want and if you can do the engine rebuild, i know its been mentioned already not to use a rover v8 but they are not much heavier than a pinto, cheap to buy and are easy to get 230 to 250bhp out of them and not alot of dosh to get there, decent set of heads, 1 1/2" headers, edelbrock inlet , and edelbrock 500 carb and 9:75 pistons and some other goodies it would be close to 250 bhp, and yes you,ve guessed it i prefer v8s
Dom Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 Or get a 24v cossie one Been said that with abit of fettling 300bhp isn't too far off. I am however very sceptical of that claim and await concrete dyno proof.
Mr Sam Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 get a 1.1 fezza and strip it ive just got in from a nice blast some rover got royaly humliated after revving his engine at me
Jay_harrier Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 24V cossies can make massive power, there's a guy in a Reliant Scimitar we come up against in the sprint championship that gives the 400 brake Triumphs a hard time!. And then there's the twin turbo route.... £££ !!
Essex Boy Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 get a 1.1 fezza and strip it ive just got in from a nice blast some rover got royaly humliated after revving his engine at me Check this out its a V8 Hayabusa lump 372 BHP 10,000RPM its a 2.6ltr and weighs 80KG http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2005/ ... v8-engine/ Fiesta fitment???
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 I have to say, I don't have to many complaints about my 2.8. As far as taking out the chav opposition, I have the blue peter badge around these parts. I love preying on unsuspecting chavs in their little hot hatches. Just think, they are giving it Chalie big spuds screaming upto 3rd as quick as you like, while you are riding the lazy wave of tourque knowing that you will hit 75mph just in 2nd gear. I love it!!! You could fit a 2.9 cologne, they are more powerful thanks to their electronic engine management, because the 2.8 has the old mechanical Bosch K Jetronic injection system. Have you thought about fitting a 2.0 litre diff???? Retro Ford did a feature on this simple mod a couple of months back and it did improve the acceleration. Bear in mind though, the 5 speed box in the 2.8 does have slightly better ratios to the 5 speed type 9 that is fitted in the smaller engined Capri's. Unfortunatley, it is a bit of a minefield when it comes to power figures of the 2.8. Ford quoted 160 bhp for the Capri's 2.8, but none if any actually made that. I have seen them range from about 138 up to 155bhp. It is up to you mate, but I am keeping my 2.8. I did think about the Cosworth 24 valver as I love that engine, but I want to have a fiddle with the standard 2.8 and see what I can do
OllieC Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 i would guess that if you put your 2.8 on a diet, and got rid of all the interior trim, added a 2.0 axle it would feel pretty quick as they are they arent all that fast, especially if you are comparing it to any modern hot hatch quite tall gearing and you need to rev the cologne to get anywhere fast
Messenjah Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 my 2ltr pinto engined capper i can see most of them off... by most of them i mean the 206's the saxos and corsas but when u get to the sort of focus st 170's and stuff they leave u for dust untill roundabouts coz they all seem to slow down ... f00k tht . at the lights it depends ... if theres shell grip then they are history no shell grip and u have to take it easier on the launch but have them by the time ure doing 65 in second (whoch doesnt seem to take very long at all altho it depends entirely on the day sometimes the capri si really hesitant lol but im gonna save up for some engine work ! edit** well the only other thing ive driven for any length of time is a landrover so it owuld feel quick woudlnt it ...
borneo Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 Haven't had any trouble seein of the small fry in my 2.8. Haven't come up against anything propper fast yet tho. I've done quite a bit of research into engine swaps of late and the 24v Cosworth is reckoned to be the one to go for. Caprisport reckon you can do the conversion with £2000ish. Classic Ford reckon you can put a V8 in for £2000. I'd say that's unrealistic. I asked Caprisport about this and they said that in reality it's gonna be more like £4000. Check out their site.
Dom Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 We put a 24 valver in ours for next to nothing. It depends on what you can do yourself. The only thing that really cost anything was the engine management and the RR session
