i had similar problem with my 2 piece shafts on my english axle, the collar you throw away but the bearing width was about 24mm due to a small step on the inside edge, i went to a company called Brammer, they ordered me 2 bearing which were 20mm and solved the problem, made by skf and were less than £40 for the pair inc vat

if you put the tray in the wheel well you then have to put spare wheel in middle of the boot which takes up more room than a battery box, why dont you get a red top gel battery and bit it under the passanger seat on its side and they give out a lot more cranking power than an acid battery and it also means your battery cable will be shorter giving less voltage drop, i use one of these but its mounted on top of the tunnel but i dont run a heater
