i think the later mexicos came with carello headlights, my 76 came with cibie headlights although i think may have come from a mk1.

My sport came with carellos but have passed their sell by date, good flat front cibies will be going in.

So Sports, Mexicos and Harriers all used the Carello headlamps.

I noted they have the mounting extension points as an integral part of the light where as the Lucas ones have separate metal mounting rings. Do the share the same headlight buckets?

So between Lucas and the Carello type, which are the most sought after and why?

PS - This thread has evolved way bigger than a wanted ad. When you start a resto thread for the new car Col, would you like me to merge this one and that one? I think buy and sell threads self destruct in a short time.

Will agree there RP, apart from the original post ? With the varying things that have been brought up re differences. It may be a good opportunity to start a thread on alternatives ?? With the parts getting less and less a list or suggestions of alternatives you could use may be a good thread. As we know anything with the RS tag attracts a premium price. So as things like seats/ lights/ centre console dashes have all been brought up. On other threads within the forum other parts are hard to get with things like master cylinders / servos. Is it about time we collected all the knowledge on here together to help people source alternative parts at a reasonable cost possibly with a bit of modication to get the same or as near as the same result. Not everyone can afford to chase and pay for original or NOS parts. Your thoughts ???

Definately right about the price of "rs" parts. Even anything with "escort mk1-2" in the add seems to command a premium not to mention most if not all of the early fords!! Only seems to be Ford tho... doesn't seem to happen to vauxhall, mini etc.

Would be good to see what people have done with parts from other manufacturers.
Read of golf wiper motors being used and someone utilised a brake master cylinder from something else...can't remember what tho .

Amazing how many parts varied slightly for the different models!!
This thread is flying....

I just thought you would eventually get around to starting a restoration thread like you did with your other cars. I can merge this thread with that if you ever wanted. Its become one of the most info packs wanted threads so it would be a shame to loose it. A parts alternative thread as well sounds like a really good idea. "Rounding the RS Ripoff"? LOL I also just found a Harrier brochure for sale here in Australia so I snapped that up and was going to start a thread about them to learn some more things about them. I will re-ask my headlamp questions in there as hijacking your wanted thread with questions probably isn't the right way to find out.

A build thread will be started once I dig it out the back of the garage, envisage in the new year. Prov booked the painters in March so it will be full steam ahead. I knew the infamous parts with the RS price tag were out there, but me been a Yorshireman don't like parting with his cash if a cheaper alternative can be found. If we start an ' alternative ' thread it would need an input from all !! Seeing as this site consists of mainly escort owners seems the right place and model to do it on. Maybe even have the alternative section divided into subsections relating to say 1) interior 2) lighting and electrics 3) transmission inc mods 4) trims and exterior. 5) heating / cooling. This could be an extra section on the forum for ease of finding what you want instead of trawling through build threads and the escort section. This would purely for alternative or cost saving mods. Could this be done ???  Anyone else have any thoughts ??

but theyre only cost saving until people realise they fit the mighty escort, then the prices go mad.  such as capri 2.0 front legs, 2.8 billys, capri mirrors and door handles, princess 4 pots. amongst other parts that fit from different makes and models. keep it a secret and knowledge in our heads and pass on cautiously or will shall be stung with the rs/mk2 tax!

I get what your meaning Phil, but most of the mods/ alternatives will have been already been done and publicised. Any new things that have come to light since these could be useful, plus if it's under one heading it's easier for someone to implement the mods thus saving them money buying the wrong things and saving them time. In most places, gone have the days of been able to walk round the local scrapyard comparing parts for their usability on a project.

You're not wrong there Col. That was a weekend staple for me and my friends back in the day, walking round a scrapyard and picking bits off of old escorts. I remember one day finding a mk2 with a K & N filter and a peco exhaust that I took home. Sometimes you could strike it lucky, but I enjoyed the fact that you were allowed to do it yourself with your own tools.

no that was another yard, used to buy a wing mirror for a fiver then drive round the corner and load the car up with the alloys we threw over the fence, seats and gearboxs followed. it was too easy! another place we used to go there was 2 scrapyards next to each other,  one was dear and one was cheap as chips. used to go in the cheap one, climb over the fence into the dear one. get the parts we needed then go back over the fence and pay for them in the cheap scrapyard. the amount of times they said "dint think we ad one o them" i'd just smile and say yep!  i'm a good boy now though.

Thanks for that if nothing comes up, may take you up on that offer ?

Col, I'm buying a scabby console this week off a local lad.

Won't know the true condition until I collect it. However, I think it can be tidied up. My plan is to get it for measurements and to see if it can be mocked up with some gauges and a mock vintage bluetooth radio facia.

Once I've done the measurements, I'll probably be looking to move it if your interested. I agree it looks scabby now though.

As long as it plays music before the 70s aswell suits me fine !! The box that's fitted is the type two as standard and will be staying in.

What no 80s Madonna like a virgin for you then?

How strong are the type 2s? They put type E's in everything here so no real experience with the 2s and always been curious about them. (I may even have some new synchros for one that I bought by mistake). If you ever decide you want to go type E let me know I will watch out for one of those Australian Extension housings for you so you can keep your new console and gearstick on the same position as it is now.

Nah, more 50/60s music for me..lol

dont think the type twos are renowned to be a strong box but with the car staying standard power ( well nearly) lol, it should suffice. Not heard of people having to remove the boxes due to failure on std cars under normal circumstances. Generally are known for bearing noise but TBH which Ford box isn't !

There is a dash fascia like yours but without the Sport log embossed on it about to finish on Ebay in a couple of hours. You dont often see them in that good condition. Not sure if you had decided to go with that type or the simpler plastic RS heater surround.
