I have defended the AVO club for many things but I can't defend that. I thought the board as it was was a good place for people to get a feel for the wealth of information that being a member and indeed other members could provide. Sadly now the door is closed it sends out a very negative message about the club

I suspect it will be the death of the AVO board as there just aren't enough club members who are regular posters on there to make it worthwhile and keep it varied and interesting. The board was always heavily over moderated but there were some good members on there in spite of the poor management and some ill advised sniping from Club management at modified cars

I knew this was coming and ended my input to their board a month or so ago because of it. My membership will go the same way when it comes due for renewal in a month or so's time.

i will defend tham and i think that its a good idea but perhaps some more rooms could be allowed for public viewing

I'm interested to find out what brings you to the conclusion that it is a good idea? What is good? The fact that members are elitist?

That's a shame i did like the odd read of that site :(

i can understand a members only room or a locked tech secyion for paying members but it realy doesn't send out the right signal to me, they allways did come accross as a bit stuck up (as an organisation not all the members) now it seems they in fact are :(

shame it'll only do em harm in the long run :?

well clubs do need money to run and people are getting everything out of the club apart from spares - and there are ways to get around that - so i think that the forum should only be open to members

but i do think that there should be a couple more public forums

You are dead right. Clubs do need money to run. However I don't see "OSF Contributor" under your name.

You're quite correct Youngun, clubs do need money to run it's provided by membership fees, and the way to get membership fees is encourage new members to join. This will not have that effect and will probably even cause some members to leave

The forum was a good place to bring people into the club and show them what a wealth of info was available. Members got plenty more than just spares, for instance: - Havoc, free valuations, free stand passes to shows. I'm by no means the most expert of the AVO forum users, but I hold my own and any info I have I give freely to anyone that needs it, that's the way to encourage new members.

On the subject of money to run, this forum isn't free either and costs a significant amount per month to run, but no-one is ever forced out for non payment

I vote we have an AVO section on good old OSF moderated by the one and only sandaled warrior. It will be a place where people of all races and dispositions can come together without fear of oppression, persecution or racial hatred.

That is very sad news. :(

If it hadn't been for the AVO club I would never have been able to rebuild my BDA and then fit it in my old Anglia van.

At the time they were helpful and encouraging. One member turned out to be a BDA God and made loads of new parts for me on his lathe in his garage and even shimmed up the head for me all for beer money, great guy,I hope I still have his contact details somewhere.

At the moment it seems like it's all the rage to set up 'membership only' sites. Well, it is if you're into internet marketing and making money online.

However, I think forums should be the other way and open to all. Yes, websites can cost a lot of money to run, if they're popular, but there are other ways to bring revenue in, rather than closing the doors to none members.

Did they take a vote on it or just woke up this morning and decided to do it?

No vote that I know of, well not one that gave any decision making rights to any of the members anyway.

I still think more rooms on this site should be contributors only even if they are rooms like the sell and buy rooms it would stop people joining just to sell

It was voted on at a commitee meeting and it was also decided that if a part bolts onto an AVO car then it is for members only so no more buying bits and pieces off them at the shows I guess.A little short sighted imo but then I have no say in what they decide so I can't really complain.

They do have an Associate Membership for people who don't actually have AVO cars so I guess that might be worth looking into.

it may be a little less hardcore and more general stuff but its not like theres no experts roaming around on here.
