Wow, 13.7 on streets !!! I'm doing better than I though  Bring on the slicks

The cars quick cars were only running 13's back in the day although most seemed to be on street tyres.

When the quicker cars now run on street tyres they too are in the 13's.

So were not going any quicker after all this time. Engine tuning hasn't changed, nor have the 1/4 mile times.

You are going really well mate, keep up the good work.

Sure the internal combustion engine has it's limits but I disagree with not going any faster today. You only need to read those old shoot-outs to see we are. I recon if Dave still had his Fiesta he would be going faster now, even if it's just because tyre compounds are better.

With enough determination you will beat dave's time and people will then chase your times, and I hate to say it, one day, in the distant future, someone will beat your time - probably in a solar powered battery driven FWD "pod":lol:

One thing I would say though, something I heard years ago and still stands.

"If you have a road car that will do 13's you have a blooming quick car!" :ykt:

I reckon the N.A. cars today are only marginally quicker than 15 years ago . This is mainly because of the better tyres and the fact that most have more bits missing !!!!!!!

Fiesta Steve , have you seen the spec of the engine that was in Dave Edmonds old mk1 x-flow Xr2 then ?:shock::shock:

They were far cheaper 15 years ago to :ykt::mrgreen:
They were cheaper but you got paid less !!!!!!!! I built a good spec 1700 x-flow for my mk1 Mexico in 1987 and i think it cost about £1500 complete . That's sounds cheap now but i only earnt about £4 an hour then and a mates brothers brand new XR2 was about £5000 !!!!!!!!

Back to the pucker oldskoolford mag features  . This is the "Street Legal Escort Challenge" feature  (current mags take note  ) . Ten top spec Escorts do battle at Brunters airfield and you'll even notice an RS turbo in the pic (which got toasted by all the oldies  ) . The cars tested had engines including pintos , B.D.A.'s, warrior pintos , atmo cossies , turbo cossies and essex V6's 8)8)8)pictures1167.jpgpictures1166.jpg

I do agree they are faster but only marginally, and as Gaz says a lot is probably down to todays tyres.

I ran 13.8 on A048R's, Dave Edmunds 'road' tyres probably weren't as good 12 years ago. I would gain less by using slicks and therefore would be slower.

But I agree Dave would probably go quicker today if he wanted too.

I asked Dave why he never got that '12' and he said he didn't need to, no one else could even do 13's !! (fwd of course).

Yes m8!! I find it unbelievable that I could ever run in the 13's with an 'all cast' spec engine. It just goes to show what is possible on a budget

Fair play to you Steve , that old motor of yours is fooooooooooking rapid and it's gonna get quicker yet :ykt::ykt::ykt::beer:

Absolutely mate, you're flying, however, I have the original Retro Mag that featured his engine, It was all cast too when he was running 13.2 (polished standard rods, cast crank, special Roger King organised Accralite pistons). The head is on Bunmans escort - he is on here. He say's he has run a 107 terminal on his now all steel 1798cc CF.

FAST! :ykt:

Perhaps not low budget though!!
