I work in road safety. Education & road safety improvements are the only way to stop casualties...

example:

hey people :D

we went andsaw a 'drive safe, stay safe' or something.

it was about road traffic accidents, and there was some one with one leg, and another who was wheelchair bound :( and a bloke telling of how is daughter was killed at 16 years old

did you know theres 8! deaths on the road a day  .. and many more serioius injurys

what i want to know is would these laws been coming in if it had been just a normal person and not someone well known :?

its sad what has happened but it dose make me wonder if it would be happening if it was someone nobody knew

I am sorry for people affected by bad driving, but don't think that speed cameras are the answer, they are primarily to generate revenue. It's been proved they have not helped with road safety or the reduction of accidents. Didn't one of the councils remove them for this reason (I think it was Swindon)?

what we need to do is only let people who can actually drive properly pass the dam test.

i speed yes, have i ever crashed and killed/maimed somone NO, could be cos i can drive, i know my limits and dont pass them, i've seen some real stupid crashes in me time and avoided more than a few!

people look at driving as a rite, it's not, it's a privalge to be worked for and worked at, constanly.

Now in Finland they know all about responsability, you try passing a test over there without the requirerd knolledge and skill and you'll be on the friggen bus mate not behind the wheel of a leathal weapon with the potential to kill a person

I'm sorry but all this speed kills stuff is horse shit.

It's careless and dangerous driving that kills, speed is a product of careless driving when excessive speed is driven at in conditions that are not safe to do so, ergo careless driving!

The 70mph limit was set before many of us were born, cars now handle much better and stop much better so why are our motorways still hamstrung by a limit that was set when Granny was driving her new Morris Minor home as a young girl?

Yes Speed should be controlled in built up areas and yes it should be monitored around road works, schools or other areas of elevated risk, but come on are we seriously supposed to believe this rash of cameras blighting the land is about anything more than revenue?

Glad I'm off to Germany soon.

If i'm honest, I think it's a good job

The standard of driving around my area is total Pony & has got worse in the last few years. The A2 for example seems to attract morons who see fit to fly in and out of lanes doing 80mph in a 50 limit, and then cause a massive accident.

I live on top of a massive great hill which is a 30mph limit... that doesn't stop people flying up and down it at a minimum of 50mph. Two people that I knew have lost their lives on that very road, not forgetting the other 10's of people that have died in accidents due to driving like a dick on that particular road.

We have alot of immigrants driving with no licences, insurance, tax, MoT, unroadworthy vehicles... not to mention our own people who also drive without the relevant paperwork. Don't get me started on the drug driving either.

If these arseholes who don't give a damn who they injure or kill can be taken off the road alot easier, it's a good thing as far as i'm concerned.

Speed camera's on the other hand are purely there to raise revenue (speaking of the ones in my borough)

Why make a car go faster than the limit set - well today the new release of the latest whatever goes 178mph - thats great but where can I drive it like that !!

I agree with what vista and bortaf have said... it aint the speed, it's carelessnes... unfortunatly, speed is often accompanied by that!

The best 'traffic calming' idea (don't get me started on those King priority and single lane sections! ) i think is those reminder lights that flash up the speed limit when your over it... not those King cash cow cameras!

as has been said, people need to be better educated, especially since most cars these days do all the drivin for ya... it's no wonder people wjo drive modern can't drive  .... skid pans, night drivin etc are a good thing to teach!

I have not long past my test and do agree that people need to be educated when it comes to driving all your taught is how to pass your test and the rest is theory.

I know my driving is not great and that am still learning how to drive even thou i have a full licence

i agree . i also drive a transit van (fantasticaly plastic) the speed limit for any vans not built on a car chassie is

50 mph on a single carridge way and 60 on a double but i reckon my van could stop quicker from 90 than the capper could from 50 on its standred brakes . but bear in mind the laws and breaking distances were wrote back in the days before capris , to be honest it just annoys me

the other problem is every year police have got to beat the previus years crime rates so new STUPID laws make this possible .

i do think it is pretty dumb that in the highway code the braking distances given appear to be from when cars had drums all round!

but still, 30 is fast enough for residential... but i can't see any problem with 80mph on a motorway! :ykt:

Seriously, next time you are on a quiet road, drive at 30, and as you go passed a lamp post do an emergency stop. Trust me, the lamp post will be just at the back of your car. I do it all the time to make a point to people!!!! This propaganda pisses me right off.

Anyway, these 6 points for going 20 above the speed limit is nothing new, and going 30 above the limit is a ban. It's always been this way, it's just more scare tactics.

Anyone remember the days where if you did 70 on the motorway you felt as if you were in the way and holding up traffic. Those were the good old days. Now if you do 70, you're often in the fast lane overtaking everyone.

Totally agree Jimbob. I carshare with a 22 year old guy who drives his automatic vectra at between 60 and 70 in a couple of the 30 zones we go though. This is at 7 in the morning, but there is still enough traffic around for it to scare you. We constantly tell him to stop driving like a cock. His reply: I pay the insurance of a 22 year old, so I'm going to drive like a 22 year old.

This morning he just missed ploughing into the back of a car turning right. We were doing about 50. It was a 30 zone. I am seriously considering tipping the police off. Luckily I'm changing jobs at the end of the year so I won't have to continue with him. If I survive.

He thinks he's a safe driver, and doesn't appreciate that he has three other lives in his hands.

My issue with the 'modified' speeding laws are that the proposal is that you will get 6 points if doing 20 mph over the speed limit? 20 mph over a 30 limit is a lot more serious than 20 mph over a 70 on a motorway, for example. I got nabbed for doing 36 in a 30 a couple of years back, and I know of others who have been done for 33 or 34 in a 30. Is there any proposal to reduce the fine/points for less serious speeding ofences? I doubt it!

AS others have said above, the big problem is careless, reckless and dangerous driving, which is admittedly often accompanied by speeding. But when you are on the motorway next time, try to leave a 2 second gap between you and the car in front, it won't take long for some ass to fill that gap to make you drop back. Then again and again. But speeding is a nice easy one to prove, it's black and white, 'you were travelling at XX mph, you're nicked Sunshine', whereas you were driving like a cock is more difficult to prove. And I might add I am not having a dig at the boys and girls in blue here, they don't make the laws...
