Gary Greenwood Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 I have a decision to make, Do I fit the 6 point roll cage, Bucket seats and harnesses into my car. I love the look but still cant make my mind up about originallity. The original seats are in good nick as is the rest of the interior, I do like the kind of rally look but not sure wether this will spoil it for the purists. Any thoughts guys......
OSF Contributor Mexican Gerbil Posted November 22, 2017 OSF Contributor Report Posted November 22, 2017 Will you be using it as a track/rally car? If not I would keep it original as there aren’t many that are. ive got my Mk1 Mex is Rally race ready but I have taken it on the track. My Mk2 is going to stay completely original. its your car though so do as you want
colr6 Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 My personal view would be don't do it, a problem I can see rising when you come to sell it. Anybody who has a good look at it and spots holes where a cage has been fitted would suspect it's been rallied. Instantly knocking some of its value off. But it's your car car and if that pleases you go for it.
preacherman Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 I wouldn't. The car looks too good. If you do fit the cage then it goes : twin cibie spotlights, weber ,janspeed, lowered etc Stereotypical look I suppose
Gary Greenwood Posted November 22, 2017 Author Report Posted November 22, 2017 Thanks guys, kind of thought that, Problem was when I went to purchase a MK2 I had it in my head to make it look like a race car although it was not going on a track, A few people who have seen the car had told me not not to cut the arches and drill holes because the car is solid. I kind of agree, Maybe when I have finished this wee project I might buy something that needs a bit more work and get my rally car look......... Been looking at the cost of tuning, got a quotation from vulcan, might spend my money on this Thanks guys
jpayne Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 seats and harnesses can be unbolted with no damage and if your not tracking it and just want the look of the cage just lay it in there...no need for bolts...its not going anywhere really...it's not a great idea though. JP
Leo Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 Having a cage nice wheels cibbies is all part of the escort "look" Period tuning, and they look great. Go for it, they'll be quite a few s/a 1600 sports around, it's not like you rcuttimg up a twin cam! Modify it and enjoy it. 1
stephens_xpack Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 It is a gorgeous looking 1600 Sport mate, but as Leo says, enjoy it as it is your motor and it's not as if you hacking it to bits. If you do just keep hold of all of the original interior so you can put it back should you ever want to. I must admit i like it as it is, but it isn't my car. Sweet looking motor.....
RWL81P Posted November 22, 2017 Report Posted November 22, 2017 if i was you i'd do it. the car is gorgeous but id mod it and keep all the original parts to swap back. as for the holes for the cage, they can be welded back up, dressed up and painted! does need 4 cibies if you cage it though!

Admin Vista Posted November 22, 2017 Admin Report Posted November 22, 2017 Yes to cibies and wheels but no to cage, they're a pain if you don't actually need them for a practical reason.
accord83 Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 Your car, your rules, but I wouldn't fit a cage for a number if reasons, they're ugly, not needed if not competing, look like a desperate wannabe, can damage trim to fit, and your insurers might have a view about one being fitted. If you want the look, make one out of plastic down spouting and place in car, . Make changes like seats etc. but keep the originals safely if you or a later keeper want to return the car to stock. But what do I know, as I said earlier, Your car, Your rules.
Gary Greenwood Posted November 23, 2017 Author Report Posted November 23, 2017 Thanks guys for your input, I can tell you that im no further forward lol lol The cibies I have already fitted Cheers Gary 1
mk1del Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 Don't spoil it if its really good, keep it original, then like you say buy something that needs work and build it rally style A mate of mine wanted to change colours on is rs years ago, kept it original and recently sold it for 30 big ones,
OSF Contributor Mexican Gerbil Posted November 23, 2017 OSF Contributor Report Posted November 23, 2017 I really would keep as is. It looks well smart.
mk1del Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 agreed nice looking original sport, plenty of projects on eBay ?

deltamal Posted November 23, 2017 Report Posted November 23, 2017 Iv'e got two Cortinas, a Mk3 modified a lot (not caged) engine, transmission, suspension and brakes, and a Mk5 Crusader estate which is original, could be the way to go, one for days out and shows, and one for track events........
