But there was some information that may shed light on it in the caption with the car in the last two pictures said this .............................

"1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray split window, California Special coupe - California Custom option ( Backup Lamp Code ) with the extra 2 tail lights installed at a California dealership prior to customer delivery"

It seems to suggest that triple lights may have been a dealership option.

That would explain it! And I think the triples actually look good! Don't suffer the in-law specialists on my behalf - its not life threatening!

I dont mind the three lights either. I wonder if the California Custom option included any other extras or if it was just the extra lights? It mentions a back up lamp code so even though the lights are red presumably it adds extra illumination for reversing do you think? Is it possible maybe this was a California centered thing which would make it more localized craze and the reason why you haven't seen it on many others? The red one pictured above also has California plates.

Additional note - I found this page that mentions it in detail. It goes into detail the reasons why many preferred it and how the change could even be performed yourself and that certain dealers also offered it directly and some used white back up lamps or red.

Dealer Bob Wingate with his fleet of 6 lamp Corvettes for sale at his dealership

It was even more common to do it yourself.

4. Goggomobil? My Aunt had one, the door fell off in the middle of London.

Very Good! That was one of the tricky ones. Most Impressed!

Im my youth they were the enemy to our Escort gang. Wankel Wa*kers as we used to call them LOL Flames out the rear pipe that would melt your windscreen. But they were all talk and No torque though. I would always insist on racing them up hills and they could never figure out why I beat them with less power. There was a third gang of Leyland P76s and they were the stoners and didn't really care about much of anything really.

I thought the Gulwing or the Diablo with goats would get more reaction than the Daytona though LOL. The Merak was a good spot, obscure but distinctive rear pillars.

Never really gone much on those old Mercs myself. The Daytona is a V12 legend though. 350bhp in 1968?
