Depends whether you want to stay in the Ford family or not, out of the two the XE is probably the better engine although it might be cheaper to put a Zetec in.

It'll still cost s few quid though with the extras that you'll need to do the installation.

i can vouche for XE, if you can find an earlier one itl have around 140/150 bhp as standard, and very little work will see 170 ish and some thing that sounds mental and pulls like a train!

good engines will cost you though, and make sure the head hasnt gone porus or get one that has been 'fixed'

courtney sport are the people to speak to about tuning the xe (well any vaux motor really), just so happens they are based in my home town!

My bros xe makes one hell of a hair raising noise when gunning it- awesome!

Mate with a zetec or XE your probably going to be running twin carbs which will probably be worse on petrol than the Vee that is a damn sight easier to install.

However going back to your original post, i have fitted a zetec in my mk1 escort, majority of it myself, and the only conversion i had done before was xflow to pinto

I voted Zetec as whilst the XE is a damn fine motor, it's knocking on a bit now so when looking for used engines it'll be easier to find a Zetec that hasn't had the guts thrashed out of it than an XE.

If you do want an stonking XE and have the money to build it. my recommend would be John Read Racing engines (JRE) near Plymouth. He specialises in them and supplies awesomely quick engines to race teams. From memory his top spec 2.4XE is good for around 306bhp

He does have a website but isn't really interested in that kind of glossy advertising and it's almost impossible to find. I have it on my favourites at home and will post it up as a link when I get home.

Ah, found it

I'm fitting a zetec in my capri and its nothing but a headache!

Gonna have to make a custom sump by the looks of it. Also probably gonna use an auto prop and 2.8 box to get the engine forward enoguh to bolt on a home made thermostat housing!

Central Blast Cleaning built a very nice Zetec powered Capri that was in a recent Retro Ford magazine.

I believe that was using the ST170 engine too... which is obviously a nice amount of power to start with, but only 20bhp or so over a 2.8i so perhaps a mildly tuned cologne is the way to go.

Alternatively V8 it !

No need for after market management so money saved there and a V8 Capri is a lot of car for not a lot of money... plus the sound.... mmmmmm

Not sure, never been in a Zetec car, though my folks now all swear by Vauxhalls  Dad had one of the later carltons and that could shift, i'm not sure if that was an XE but it was 2 litre and was pretty nice, but my sister has had a couple of Calibras. The first was a red top and was a really nice motor so I would say that but traded it in for a later model and the block was porus, and there was always oil in the cooling system  would of expected it to be water in the oil but the water always went black. It was a bit poo that one, spoilt a great car.

Its only a headache to you because your not buying the readily available conversion parts!!!!

Cant just say its a headache mate when it really doesnt need to be.

the oil in the water is because of the head, their renound for going porus, buts its a simple job to fix, be fitting a liner in the oil way (from head to block)

the XE is known as the RED TOP, they came in various guises from the early cavaliers/ calibras up to the later astra gsi's. (2.0L 16v).

the earlier cavs and calibras had more power as standard and power was reduced as time went on through various restrictions (inlets etc).

the turbo calibras were the same engine but built for turbos (low comp etc)

the later vaux's like mk3 cavs used the ecotech engine, which i think is derived from the xe but again produce even less power, (130/135, 2.0L 16v)

hope above is useful

Currently fitting a zetec in my cortina. I have 2 1800s that cost me £100. I am making the conversion parts myself. I have made the water rail and i am going to adapt a CVH (sierra 1800) sump. If you buy these 2 items thats over £300 (the sump cost £30). You can buy off the shelf injection/ignition thats at least a grand and it will cost as much on carbs. I am having a go with the standard injection. I don't have the space to car break so i am buying as required. The manifold and injectors came with the engine and i have spent £60 on wiring and ecu. I still need various relays. After that you need high pressure fuel, i am still trying to sort this one but i hope to use the complete tank from a zetec engined escort (if i can make it fit). Good luck :D
