BaileyMex Posted October 22, 2021 Report Posted October 22, 2021 For me, period mods and tweaks to make it more user friendly and a bit more poke of course Saying that, I'm the one with a pimp paint job so I cant talk 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Make it your own and dont worry to much about the AVO brigade telling you that you don't have the right wheel nuts
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted October 22, 2021 Moderator Report Posted October 22, 2021 I personally prefer one step away from standard. Not what you would call a resto mod though. The fact is as much as we love them Ford cut corners on occasions and the odd mistake so a little bit of embellishment to rectify those niggly things is ok by me. Adding a taller first gear to that Type E / 9 Gearbox. LED bulb upgrades to illuminate those instruments back like original, slightly quicker racks, alloy based gear levers to replace those disintegrating plastic ones, things like that to correct those common failings. In the case of Australian cars, a mirror change and substituting a European RS manifold for that totally inefficient Cortina one fitted to Pinto engines. No one has ever noticed the mirrors arent original even here in Australia because they still are sort of, same with the manifold it all looks standard. If the upgrades are done stealthily and help deficiencies then go for it. If you check in our thread for record breaking prices you will note its all the totally original ones that have been restored as they came out of the factory. They fetch two to three times what a excellent condition resto mod fetches so totally original standard is really where the money is right now.
Johnny Boy Posted October 22, 2021 Report Posted October 22, 2021 Mine is a hybrid mk1 Cortina, not one for the purists, as some say. But it makes 160bhp 1800cc on 40 webers, fast, goes round corners, starts ,stops beter than a Lotus. I didn,t cost Lotus money, and I'm not worried about modding it , and losing its value. 1 1
deltamal Posted October 24, 2021 Report Posted October 24, 2021 I've got a moded Mk3 Tina Cologne V6 with modded gearbox and suspension etc, and a Crusader estate that I was going to leave standard - well that was the intention! but just drop the springs by an inch put nicer wheels on, oh and change the gearbox, not too much change, but the engine was a bit tired, so a re-bore and freshen the head up with a skim, but might as well flow it, bigger valves and cam, and fuel injection to manage it all, I just can't help it! 😊 1

Fords over the period were being modified by enthusiasts almost from new here. In fact you could order Capris and Escorts direct from the dealer with upgrades and modifications. AVO Special Build Order anyone? For limited edition run cars, Lotus Cortinas and AVO cars maybe it is true to a degree, but for those cars lower down the model ranges I think most people would pay more for a restomodded car, in particular if it has some tasty upgrades, than a boggo 2 / 4 door with a wheezy 1100 and drum brakes. @colr6you voted for completely standard? Not sure how your Anyour and Cortina fit into that category 😆
colr6 Posted October 24, 2021 Report Posted October 24, 2021 Sure there was an option for both ???? If it’s well done it don’t bother me. I thought all my mods were STD anyway….lol

RWL81P Posted October 24, 2021 Report Posted October 24, 2021 for me, i love period mods, with the exception of a couple of more modern engines. cant beat a slammed sleeper on 13s, barking on webers.

Not sure how your Anyour and Cortina fit into that category 😆 A few years ago I would totally agree with you but something has recently changed in OSF market that has catapulted them into valued objects in their own right not just boy racer fun machines. Your right in that it had more applied to the sporting models in the past but the decades of resto modding have meant that base models in their factory state are even in lesser numbers than the sports ones. So much so totally factory original base models have become almost extinct limited editions in their own right. Whether that be a mint restored example or even untouched low km one. And there is a threshold of quality and originality that you have to reach of course but once reached that seems to always surpass the value of clean well modified cars. For example we were this past week placing a value on Dales RS2000 at around 30-35k. In reference to the record breaking prices thread again there a totally original pristine unmodified RS2000 fetch 100k. Even a more basic non RS model if you restored it as it came out of factory with meticulous detail it would fetch more than one with bubble arches and a Webers on the side. Case in point Rays 1300Es would be worth more than any 1300E there is against any other modified or not. Most definitely owners have modified these cars since they drove them off the lot and certain mods have value and appeal when you go to resell them over and above a worn clapped out ones but there will always be someone out there prepared to pay the big bucks for that just out of the factory restoration. Its the Anorak tax LOL. Mind you it can also cost more to get those elusive original parts to achieve that! Our OSFs have reached full classic status in the past few years and don't need mods to sell their wears anymore. Nostalgia costs I guess. Presently a factory restored package in the current climate will achieve a premium for its total originality over a good modified one. That's not to say for a car you are going to keep and enjoy for the long term you shouldn't build it into the machine that suits you. Life long keepers like mine have no impact in resales values but it does ultimately if you go to resell down the line. Also modifications are very personal and almost always you will say to yourself "well I wouldn't have done that for mine". That affects the bottom line values. We had a new member join recently with a barn find of an orange Rally Pack. Based on discussions I suspect that car will be restored beautifully to almost factory original, as such it will surpass mine in value even though mine has the most basic of upgrades that appeal to me and for me make it a better car. Its that museum factor I guess especially after major social and technological changes through time, people will always pay more for that ancient Greek pot with its original handles not one that has had them glued on more stronger even if that meant it would never break again. 2
