I had to leave my car and sit by a mates after four different people came across in short time and asked is it for sale.

No, it is not for sale, if it was, it would have a big £*%k Off sign saying "FOR SALE".

I'll talk to anyone, but what is it with the "What's it worth? How much did you pay for it?" and "Is it for sale?" brigade. And why do they get annoyed when told it isn't for sale, and no I don't want their suggestions of what engine I NEED, NEED FFS, to fit in it. If I wanted to, guess what $hitfor brains? I would.

somebody waved me down as I was leaving Classic Ford Show and asked if the Van was for sale. I said no but thought "You probably wouldn't pay what I'd want for it anyway".

The elderly couple I bought my MK2 from only stopped driving it as they got constantly hassled to sell it when driving around, they told me that people would physically park their cars in front of their paths at junctions etc.. In the end they were to scared to drive it and stuck it in the garage out of the way.

Adding to that when they ask is it for sale and you say if the price was right, then they ask how much the right price would be , ,couple guys asked me few week back about my rs , told them £16k , then they said didn't think they where worth that money, they must think still  get them for couple of grand,

Won't be be buying aRS now then at that price. Think about it they were only a couple of grand new so there old now with a few rust spots here and there they've got to to be worth less haven't they? Think that's the philosophy some people use. Or they say Well I've just bought a new bmw and its lost four grand and its not 6months old so your car must only worth a few quid surely at that age! LOL

I have kept my Twincam in storage at my home for many years. Long story is that I went back to University and couldnt afford to register (Tax) both my cars. I keep it covered and well hidden under a carport. You cant even tell a car is there let alone what sort of car it is. In the time it has been hidden away I have had three people knock on my door and ask me if its for sale. All three were from the other side of world. two were Scottish and one was Irish. I have not participated in any clubs or events with that car for at least 20 years yet somehow these guys could still find me. One guy said he heard there was one in my suburb and drove around the streets and saw my Mk2 parked out front and then came and knocked on my door. Its very unsettling and I totally can understand the anxiety of others here when they get constantly asked and even blocked in the street. Things are made worse by the fact these people generally dont want to pay a fair price and think they have nothing to loose but asking and seeing if you low offer so they can get a bargain. Trouble is you get sick of that happening several times a week I would imagine. Its just about people wanting to low ball you and hoping you wont know its real value. They never factor that heaps of others are doing the same and the amount of time you can waste collectively. You try to be as polite and accommodating as you can and answer questions to the curious but sometimes your in a hurry and simply need to get out of there. I think its frustrating because to me they are just old Escorts. Its not like its a Lambo or Bentley or something. Thats the problem having owned them for so long you loose perspective how they are viewed by others today. But To the original poster I totally get your frustrations.

I'm going to take mine out later, as we're going looking for a Vauxhall Mocka up the local Dealer's. I've driven a 1.4, but want to try the 1.7 diesel.

Anyway, I'm going to have a bit of fun with them and tell them I'm looking to trade the RS 2000 in...

dt36, I ended buying a 1.7 diesel Mokka. Good on fuel & better performance than the 1.4 in my opinion. Happy car shopping, be interested to hear what they offer you for the RS

I hear what you're saying accord83. I get it with my Mk1 Apache and VW splitscreen. I always say the VW is worth about £5k as it's so heavily customised that it is nigh on impossible to sell and it's a real ball ache to maintain.

I say the Escort is quite badly rusted in the chassis so it's worth about £4k and I wouldn't sell it as it's bordering on being dangerous.

NO WAY, I'm telling them their true values!!

But then again how many of us have asked in the past or present,I have many a time and bought some very nice cars not all ford admitidly ,same old saying if you don't ask you don't get,but if they say it isn't I leave it at that,

On another one how many of you have been promised a car if it's ever for sale from friend family or someone you've met and they sell it a complete stranger ,happened to me loads over the years

I guess with the economy improving a bit there is more interest in buying a classic car, I got asked 3 times at a local show in Cornwall if my Mk3 was for sale, a definite NO!

There is a post script to this topic, last night was our local school prom, my next door neighbours daughter was due to go in her dads Celica Supra, but it's been in the paint shop for 2 1/2 months (long story). Anyhow the guy who recommended the painter offered one of his car collection, Vette, Pantera, Ferrari, you get the idea, as a reserve. Last night he arrived in a Dodge Viper, I heard it and went to look, well you would wouldn't you. I was introduced as:

"John, he has a Mk1 Escort".

Yup, the reply was "Hi, is it for sale?"

I had to laugh.

IMHO 99% of peoples cherished vehicles ARE for sale when you are talking below 35-40k. Above that, the lure of £££ isn't so great as they couldn't use it to replace what they have with something more desirable from their bucket list. Its just a matter at what level the offer is. We are all passionate about our toys but cash is king.

There is no way this car is ever going for sale, it has too much family history over 3 decades, It's been laid up in barns more times than a hot farmers daughter, plated more times as well. It's a Triggers Broom of a car, but it's part of the family tree, and it got laid up under one of those for a while. I am it's current curator until my son who rebuilt it when he was 16 pays back the deposit for his gaff, (might be a long time in my hands ). If I sold it my nuts would be in the mangle.

First time I took mine out after being off the road for a while I was approached on a petrol station forecourt & asked if it was for sale, sets you on edge especially with all of the thefts.

Told him that I had plans for it, guy was deaf as a post & had to tell him that several times before I decided to get in it & drive away!

Bit late with an update:

 

Took the RS out car hunting and had a bit of a play with the Sales Guy to see if he would bite on my car a few weeks back.  I had no intention of trading it, but was just curious on what he'd offer.

 

He actually looked around the RS and said he believes that they are worth 15 to 20k, but could not commit on a trade unless they had a specialist in to value it.

My Missus is whispering to me "20k my arse. I wouldn't give you 2k for it".  She's right though, no way are they worth what he said.

 

Ended up going back the next day and traded her Corsa in for a Mokka 1.7 CDTI SE.  She loves it, so I'm happy with that.  Nice car to be fair...
