I have heard mention of the silver and black plates here  beforethat people love them on their classics but your not allowed to put them on modern cars is that right?. You couldn't put them on Escorts before now?

Early Escorts yes - up to '73/74 but everything after - white plate front / yellow plate back. It never used to bother me but the yellow really clashes with Riviera Blue so i'm happy I can change it - if I want to!

I just slip inside the limit then. Im 74 on the tax book so the black plate will still be legal!

As from January 2021 anything up to 1980 ie 31st December 1979 can carry B&S plates so you are well in.

Yes you could, they were always legal on escorts first registered before 1st Jan 1973, but when the rolling VED exemption came in, they permitted the cut off date for black and silver plates to roll forward too. They've now reversed the numberplate element of the rolling basis and have set a first registration cut of date of 1st Jan 1980 for them to be permitted for use.

Im still a bit confused why they are restricted for modern cars though? Is there something about them they they don't fit or work on newer models?

Regulations / legal requirement for yellow and black reflective numberplates on the rear and white and black on the front. All set out in a British Standard document

Because our DVLA is run by idiots. Other than the colour, there is no reason what so ever, they are all the same size and do exactly the same job....🤔

So has anyone had speeding ticket with black and silver number plates on their cars!

Thats an excellent question! I remember someone on here once suggesting that speed cameras have trouble reading those plates and that's why they try limit their availability. Im not sure why they think owners of classics wont speed in theirs though, they never come to this forum that's for sure otherwise they would know better!

When I was a kid I had a black and silver numberplate on my bike too, I also had a piece of card clipped to the back of the frame to catch the spokes, it sounded really good if I pedalled fast, the Police never caught me with my illegal plate, if wasn't even for my bike!😎🤣

Interesting to read that the rolling number plate exemption was in fact a mistake but they are not reverting back to a 1973 cut off so as not to cause owners the cost of new yellow/white number plates. Personally i'm glad they have stopped them rolling each year they look silly on cars from about 1972 onwards from the late 60's most cars were fitted with the new yellow/white plates (period photographs and Tv shows/films can confirm this).

I also see that the Euro symbol is no longer allowed to be displayed on newly made plates from 1/1/21 (i'm guessing the Union/English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish flags are still permittable).

Worth noting that new number plate laws/changes are coming in September 2021 they don't state what they are but if you need new number plates for your car might be worth doing before September in case the new changes are not welcome.
