How is it that no one seems to give a toss when the factory competition cars changed shells / registrations virtually every other rally, as I don't see their values declining? F**king investors are what's causing the problems in the classic car market!

That's just b**s##t - half the escorts on the road currently could be declared hooky with the modifications that are actually allowable, if the DVLA got involved!

Like it or loathe it, that's the way it is and people are having their V5C's pulled and applications for RS / Mexico V5's for cars long dormant declined on application.

I don't have a problem with re-shelling per se. But you might have a different view if that later shell once belonged to you and was stolen off of your driveway!

And when Escorts were £50 it didn't matter so much, but a tidy up and running MK1/2 2dr is £20k now. How would you feel if you spent £40k on a MK2 Mex and it turned out not to have the provenance that the V5 suggested? Personally I would be utter fooked off, when you could buy the same car without Mexico on the V5 for £20k!

Even since the 80s you had to be armed with the knowledge when buying a genuine RS or Mex as they are/were to many shysters ready to turn you over!

I can't see that argument either! It's insured as is not what it might be ! If you have agreed value there should be no dispute! If you paid 40k for it why wouldn't you insure it for at least that? 

I know my RS has been either reshelled or had extensive work - so it's not original but it won't be sold as that and I'm not looking to fleece anyone either!

James, don't use Amazon, for some reason their prices are overinflated. Check ebay and also the websites of the normal bookshops. I can get that book for 40-50 euro.

I do try find bargains where ever I can. But even that Aussie book you mention was another I saw, its some rare collectable now, I remember you could buy that one new for $29.95. Now look! You mentioned you were just going to look at the pictures, better wrap it up in acid free paper and treat it like a Gutenberg Bible! LOL

I bough a copy of this from a shop in the northern suburbs of Sydney along with a nice Fair Dinkum model RS500 sierra back in 2002, i best dig it out 👍

Clearly Australia is not the place to buy automotive books and we are being ripped off. Trouble is postage charges would double the price of most of these hard cover heavies so thats probably why some of the retail stuff is inflated too because of having to bring them in from overseas.

Agree 100% recarding 'authenticity' of Fords.

My Mexico was re-shelled when only 4 years old. Most old Fords have a few stories to tell.

I sold a completely standard RS2000 4 years ago with a genuine 40k miles. It made crazy money. I loved the car but as it was so original modifications wherte a complete no-no.

My current car, Mexico Mk2 has had so many mods its probably over 75% non original and to be honest thats how I like it.

These guys are a bunch of enthusiasts trying to take on the DVLA head-on. Their aim is to authenticate cars for what they actually there and then with a certificate to proof.

My view on the subject is none of the cars we love and drive are really worth whats paid. 

If a genuine 100% original car is your thing buy one and pay over the odds. 

If you want a car you can live with and drive buy one thats been messed with. 

BUT. dont buy a car because it will be worth 'x' amount in the future, buy it because thats what you want.

We are at the end of the day car enthusiast not car dealers.

When I bought my MK1 Cortina, I knew I wanted to modify it and " soup it up" as we said in the old days.

That immediately cancelled out a GT or Lotus.

Why, because I would have wiped the resale value, that those Cortinas are making.

I drive the arse off the Cortina, and it's a lot of fun, for sensible money.
