mk2 ben Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 Ive been seeing lots of stories in the media of folk changing their beloved classics in to battery powered, personally there is no way NO WAY i will ever do that what are your thoughts on this and on boris' plans in 2030?
Ray Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 certainly wouldnt do it until forced to Boris clearly dosnt wear the trousers in his house and its his girlfriend calling the shots

notenoughtime Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 It will only be new electric cars sold from 2030 so we will be able to keep our ancient fossil fuelled cars on the road I don’t think we will have the infrastructure in place for the amount of vehicles that they plan on selling anyway recently I know of a build of 300 homes and only 6 charging points that is ten floors high, I can see it now all those extension leads hanging down the building lol
DT36 Posted December 3, 2020 Report Posted December 3, 2020 I have an absolute rot bag of a Mk1 Escort spread between my garage loft and my old man's garage. I genuinely think that by the time I get round to doing something with it, electric drive will probably be my best option. Maybe even my only option. However, if I went this way it would have to have some form of stereo, two channel speaker system giving me an induction roar in the engine bay with BDA output noise via an exhaust tube 😂

Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted December 3, 2020 Moderator Report Posted December 3, 2020 Here in order to drive the economy and lower wages for big business they operate on a high immigration model. The demand for housing outstrips supply at which case we have record housing prices that the average person can no longer afford. By concentrating the high immigration in the cities back yards and garages are a thing of the past. When you look at new housing estates there is only one car space per household and the rest have to park on the street. Basically their greedy sardine packed model leaves little room for charging multiple household cars. Add to that out councils have less power and duties than yours, they don't control anything to do with housing policing or social services basically only managing garbage collection and mowing the grass in parks. They are lightweights full of their own self importance that wont ever have the initiative and are too cheep to ever put up charging points. The end result is that we wont ever be going fully electric like they are imposing on you guys. there simply isnt the infrastructure to do so. The only reference to electric cars the government has made is to figure out a way to tax them for their road usage which has traditionally been paid through high fuel excise and taxes. They are in a panic that revenue is dropping the more people switch to electric. They don't care about how difficult it is to charge them up they just want you to pay for the privilege. The focus on air pollution reduction seems to miss the point that lithium battery production and subsequently disposal is a much much more filthier business that barely gets a mention compared to fossil fuels. However it still doesn't stop people doing this.
katana Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 'Bit of Fence sitting coming up'! Unfortunately, like it of not, we as a species are f**king up the planet whether through carbon release - fossil fuels etc, dumping plastics, over population and resource depletion. None of this can be denied, it is happening and that can only be blamed on one species out of millions on this planet, and only one species can do anything about it. The human race is complacent about its future, sort of, it was OK yesterday, looks OK today, probably be OK tomorrow but past a year into the future 99.9% don't care and won't change UNLESS forced to. I was in construction till I retired and was being forced (through regulations) to design 'greener, more energy efficient' buildings which cost more to build but land is in short supply in the UK, so it too costs more and so to maintain the stupid (greedy IMO) profit margins, developers want more buildings per acre to justify the land cost and the cost of building, so everything gets smaller (houses) or you build flats. Govt. on one hand is trying to reduce car ownership by taxes - fuel tax, road fund tax, VAT, insurance tax, congestion charging etc., restricted parking availability on new developments, minimising road building / repairs but failing to put the necessary infrastructure into place to provide an alternative. They are hoping developers will add charging points to new developments - who will because they won't get planning approval without, but the costs get passed on to the end purchaser who doesn't want an electric car! But conversely if you look at the average mileage a car does / day, an electric car will do that comfortably - say 50 miles? And mostly that will be 3 days between charging - 12-15kwH @ 8p/kw = 96-120p So, simple economics says its a sensible plan. Ok long trips - how many 300+ miles trips made be average Joe per year - I myself probably 3 since 2018! So for those you could either hire a long range electric of face having to charge en route ( which, after 300 miles a stop for 30 minutes ain't a bad idea) Yes employers, car parks and service stations are going to have to start providing charging points but with convenience comes opportunity for profit ie. charge 10p/kw over the base rate - its still less than a £5 to drive 300 miles and they'll still be selling fuel ( at higher prices no doubt) because petrol and diesel powered vehicles won't disappear overnight! No one like change - we resist it unless there is an overwhelming benefit for us personally or it is forced upon us. This is what is happening with the No fossil fuelled cars thing after 2030 - if the rate of change cannot be accelerated through choice it has to be done by force and that, until the majority can be swayed to see the benefits - long term - forced decisions will be all you get. You can guarantee that once the market HAS TO drive electric, entrepreneurs will start opening 'charging stations' as there will be potential for profit, guaranteed! Me? I'm ordering a new hybrid in December 2029 cos they'll be cheap as chips with dealers trying to get rid of stock and as to the rest - planet, resources, people . . . . . . . f**k it i'll be long gone to need to worry about it LOL! Happy Crimble wishes to all - enjoy the new year LOL!
mk2 ben Posted December 4, 2020 Author Report Posted December 4, 2020 There is also the problem of the country making enough electricity i read somewhere that at present the uk is running at max and we're using 90-95% of that so where is the power going to come from?

theloudboy Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 Shell Fulham in London will be shells first all electric garage so it’s coming
e501 Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 But i dont think ev,s charge up in 5 minutes, something i was reading about the other day was i think 4 hours for a 80 % charge, not much good on a long journey. And as we probably all know if this country ceased to exist it would have no noticeable effect on world emissions, yet we are being forced into ev,s ..
eeb43 Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 well the ev may or may not be a good thing but! whats going to happen to all of these cars/batteries at the end of their life? there doesnt appear to be any mention of recycling the batteries anywhere and the local scrapyards dont even know if they will be able to deal with them

deltamal Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 So what's needed is a hydrogen conversion for old Fords......... 1

stephens_xpack Posted December 9, 2020 Report Posted December 9, 2020 Can't argue with much of what Katana has quoted above, all makes a lot of sense. With regards Classic cars, I personally would rather not own one than have to convert it to run as an electric car. There is nothing quite like the sound of a well drilled Pinto, V6, V8, cossie, the list goes on and on, and that is a massive part of the attraction, for me anyway. I could just listen to a decent engine and it will make me smile. I have been to shows where a guy will start up his American 6.2 litre V8 and just let it slowly idle, and the sound just makes me smile, some times even laugh - there is no substitute. In comparison the soul less sound of an electric car resembles that of a days golfing when using a buggy, and that is not what an old car should ever sound like. New cars, I couldn't care less, as for me, they are just a means to an end, and I would use electric if necessary at some point as a day to day commuter, but never our old classics, I would rather sell and move on with my life. 4
DT36 Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 Had a go on a KTM Freeride E-XC last weekend. What a brilliant bike. As a youngster, I raced 2 stroke motorcrossers and moved onto 4 stroke Enduros as I got a bit older. I think this electric KTM would have easily stuck with one of my old bikes. Now I love the sound and smell of 2 strokes, but if it wasn't for the £10k ticket, I'd have the KTM On Any Sunday. Way back in the day on my RM250. Look at the Mini Metro 😁 : 2
