You can tell Mk4s by the large peak in their bonnet

That's a Mk5 and hopefully there is a high rise V8 manifold underneath to justify it...

Time for a bump for this thread.

What happens in South Africa is best left in South Africa?

Hahaha I knew someone would say that! Technically no its not. In Australia we had Mk4 TE Cortinas and Mk4 TF Cortinas. Both having more distinctive bonnets than UK models to fit the upright 6's they would put in them from the Falcon range. Its an Aussie photo making it a Mk4 TF. We also had different Mk3 TC and TD Cortinas just to be annoyingly different as well. We called them "Humpies" because of the added peak in the bonnet for local engines combined with the peak in the guards gave them a series of humps.

Technically it's not a Mk5 here either, but a Mk4B, but we generally refer to them as Mk5s.

Ahhhh see I never knew that! That goes some way to explain the Aussie ones both being called Mk4s (TE and TF) while yours were Mk4 and Mk4b. You learn something new every day!

Dont know if this one has been on here in the previous 58 pages; the owner probably couldn't afford a real testarossa so he build the next best thing, well sort of. JP and/or Marcel will have seen it at a meeting in Holland many years ago.

I always called them Cortina 80, which I thought was the correct name, every day's a school day, (which is handy for me as I need to catch up, I spent a lot of time playing hooky😁)

I quite like looking at all these pics, it reminds me why I got into the scene as it used to be about the craic and budget diy'ers showing the finance brigade how to enter and exit roundabouts but sadly its all about the coin and standard cars currently.

So, which of the cars in this thread would you have in your garage then Gordy?

I know what you mean, but surely you can still be a DIY Modder AND make the end result tasteful? The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Quite a few to be fair Scott, I like that yellow rs above as it reminds me of a car that i grew up around and aspired to. Just remember most of these cars in the late 80's / early 90's wern't worth a swank and were toys/expressions of the working classes. Sadly now its all gone to shit....

I must admit, I do miss my early cars which were bought and run on a budget, especially my old MK2 1600 sport, hand sprayed matt black (and then satin), Forest arches, slammed on banded white lotus steels!!! loved that car so much, was far from perfect, but it was lively and slid around all over the place, and if it got a nick or scuff, I just got out another Halfords rattle can 😆

It also embarrassed a few yuppies in their new cars

Maybe it was where I lived but even when they were cheap in the 80's and 90's I didn't see 70's Fords round my way with Max Power / Rip Speed type body kits. The closest I think I came to it was Mk3 Capris with Kat bodykits.....trots off to google......

I think I still like this look.............except maybe the lights in the front bumper.

Long gone now, but used to go to Croydon Race and Rally, and it had loads of the old RGA (Richard Grant) kits available for Cortina's, Escorts, Fiestas etc.

Was never my cuppa tea, but there was plenty of choice if you liked that kinda thing

Don't much like it on Escorts, but I think it suits the long low shape of the Capri.
