Hi,

Do we get any discount at Opie Oils?

Is there a club code we need to use?

i dont know tbh, but i will say this, your not a cult member, so even if there is, you wouldnt be entitled to the code without upgrading your membership to cult status

so what is the cult of old skool ford, i seems that to most of you, the answer is either unknown, or dont want to know

the cult of old skool ford, is basically where your paying for your membership, for just a measly sum of £12 a year, it helps pay for the running of the forum, as well as events and the public liability insurance required for those events, and you do get va few enhanced features for it as well

whilst this is something that Scott (aka Vista) does on a voluntary basis, if theres not enough subscriptions come in, then theres not enough to pay for everything, that includes this forum and its hosting to be on the net

theres only so long something can go on without funding, before it has to close, and at only 47 paid members, i doubt that even covers the liability insurance, let alone all the other costs to running this site, so clearly Scott is putting his hands in his own pockets to give you all something

its easy to tell from the logins how many unpaid daily users this site has, and imho, thats an abysmall take up, and abuse of Scotts goodwill

so come on peoples, lets see you put your hands in those pockets, £12 a year is nothing compared to what you spend on your cars

and the help and info you get here is priceless

Well, I've been sitting back on this, but here it is again, albeit in another post over it's yearly cycle.

Been on this site for many years and been a paid member on and off during that time.

I think I've helped many members out with advice and spare parts, while also being helped back. Also help other members locally  with labour or repairs if I can.

However, seems to be that not being Cult makes me unwelcome at the moment. Would think a few others are feeling this too, but keeping quiet so not to rock the boat.

I've never displayed at shows or go to shows anymore. Only used my car once this year, having covered 38 miles in my Escort and 82 in the Mondeo. Mortgage has basically doubled, so Mondeo got sorned, Escort is tax exempt. Maybe one of them will have to go this year.

Maybe people not in the "Gang" like myself now, as I don't take easy to being pressurised or influenced by passive mobbing into conforming can have our own status. What about Scab?

tbh, like everything in life, things come at a cost, so ignoring shows for a minute, how do you think a forum like this is funded then, because there are costs to buy the forum software, updates and maintenance, then server/hosting costs etc, as well as the domain each year, then for the club to do shows, scott has to have public liability insurance

But if no one pays anything, then its just down to Scott to put his hands in his pockets for everyone elses enjoyment, so is that really fair, and how long do you think that can go on, before he says enough is enough

i know scott dosnt advertise or push the cult part, and these are probably some of the reasons why, but it needs advertising as such for people to realise its there, and the point above was that you cant expect paid member benefits if your not a paid member, but because its not advertised enough, it turns out that yet another member didnt even know what it was, im begining to think Scott should re name it in some way

£1 a maonth is all it equates to, not exactly a fortune in the scheme of things is it really, especially when you look at people spending oodles of cash on parts and upgrades for their cars

the lack of proper membership becomes obvious for me, from when we are trying to sort out the stand at the NEC, and we get a hard time from them due to lack of ticket purchases, and it becomes a tad embarassing when you have to sit and explain that it dosnt really actually have any members/audience as such, to advertise it to

i appologise if trying to get people to be paid members offended, ill leave it there and wont bother trying again, as it was not an intention to upset anyone, just to draw attention to and to get the club additional paid members.

Thank you for raising this again Ray. I don't do so myself as invariably it does result in some pushback. Funding wise we are OK. I try to raise most of the funds we need from site sponsors but the number of those is dropping off as their advertising budgets gravitate towards Facebook. The small funds raised by our Tour event each year helps too.

What the forum takes most of that I can't recoup elsewhere, is time. Time with software management, membership enquiries, sponsorship fund raising and invoicing, social media outlets, event management and planning for the Tour (and I remain deeply indebted to @Mexican Gerbil for his assistance planning that each year).

What I am grateful for is how mature this forum has become over the years, in days past there'd be falling ours, bickering and bad language on a regular basis, thankfully that all seems to have moved over to Facebook.

@DT36no sweat, it's fine. Contribute if you want to, don't if you don't .......but don't for a moment think you're not welcome for not doing so.

No, we don't have a discount code for Opie Oils. I use them myself as a source of Valvoline VR1

Not used Opie Oils before, but heard good things about them.

RE the membership topic, and not wanting to drag it on, I need to go back... way back... back into time..... Sorry 90's rave tune in my head.

When we first started OSF way back in 2003, it got huge in what seemed overnight, and financially it soon escalated into a full time job whilst still having a full time job, this was before all of the technology that we have at our disposal now, we were receiving and paying for things with a specific OSF cheque book and bank account, and buying bulk stamps to post out show passes and tickets, ordering stock and stickers and investing in gazebos, banners, flag poles, and at the time there were 6 or 7 of us all sharing the workload, and paying for things from our own pockets and not necessarily getting the money back. But it was for the buzz of it all.

OK, so times have changed and pretty much everything is electronic and online now which obviously massively helps, but running OSF is still a big task, let alone for just one person! (Acknowledging others help with shows which I know Scott is grateful for)

From day 1 to now, the ethos is the same - Everyone is welcome! - Everyone!!! if it's OSF it doesn't matter if it is concours or a work in progress, people do what they can, when they can, and with 'Classic Ford Tax' being what it is now, things are more expensive to buy for the cars. let alone what else is going on in the UK.

So, paid up members religiously posting daily, a non paid up member also posting all the time and offering help to all, or just someone that pops on every now and again - ALL WELCOME!

Scott is doing a sterling job, but as the advert goes 'Every little helps'..... if you can join great, any contributions are always welcome. But if it's not for you, then that's cool, still keep getting involved - OSF is what it is today because of the members! We never knew OSF would last 6 months, let alone racing towards 20 years!

So massive thanks to all of you!

I tend to agree, perhaps change it from Cult Member to 'Paid member with benefits' 🤣 just not sexual ones, I think Scott might draw the line there.

Calling it "Friends with Benefits" is kinda funny and nice. Changing it from a Cult would be easier on the joints, this kneeling and bowing at the cars in the driveway every morning is getting hard on the kneecaps.

Yes, a huge well done and thanks to all that have been involved in the evolution of this site from the very beginning, for me it's the only forum that I use as not really interested in social media due to bad experiences in the past and the politics of other car forums.

As for kneeling James, can't do it as had both mine replaced which makes for interesting positions when crawling under the car 😬

Where should I look? What to compare? Share you knowledge please.

Hi @Miniliteman

If you look at data sheers for the oil you need and compare against the same on other oil brands you will be able to see.

For me I need a Classic 20w50 with high zinc content (ZDDP) which helps to reduce wear on older type engines.

Hope that helps.

Dont tell me that I have my referral for knee scans. Decades of caving (Potholing you you guys) has really taken its toll it seems.

Im trying Motul 20w50 Classic at the moment. Comes in fancy 2lt tins. My locally made 15w50 was discontinued due to a corporate US takeover by Fuchs so I had to look elsewhere. Link opens a PDF file of its specs.
